I've been trying to get a mesh coil at around 2.5 -3.0 ohms on a VH genesis but finding it near impossible. I can do 1.0 to 1.4 no problem but I like a cooler vape. Any ideas on how to progress?
My guess is thinner kanthal (I'm currently using the provided 0.2) so maybe try 0.14ish and 6/7 or more coils?
Any help would be appreciated.

ohms per metre is the key, higher = better at such short pieces

Hmm, something's odd here. I'm using 0.2 with 5 coils and getting 1.3 - 1.4.

it's a quite small diameter wick, really, at under 2mm - for 2 ohms, five or six coils of 0.15 might be better - I'm running six coils of 0.2 for 2.2 ohms on an NGP with 2.5mm wick diameter.

Hmm, something's odd here. I'm using 0.2 with 5 coils and getting 1.3 - 1.4. You can buy different ohms per meter wire, even at the same diameter, also the thickness of your wick and how loosely your coils are, at an average using a full 3.7cm of 0.2 kanthal you should get 2 ohms also bear in mind that a new coil will start at lower ohms, after use (gunk) it rises dramatically Dont know how cool you like to vape but 3.2volts at 1.5ohms is 6.8watts where as 4volts at 3ohms will give you 5.3 watts

I struggle to get a vape-able flavour without it tasting burnt with the atomiser at 1.4 Ohms & Provari at 2.9V (which gives me 6W and is just getting to the point of being on the wrong side of hot for me).
I normally vape really low watts @ around 5W and the difference between 0.2 watts can make or break a flavour for me.
I'm aiming for 2.5 - 2.8 ohms which would allow me to go between 3.2 - 4.6V (ish) to modify my sweet spot according to whichever liquid I'm using.
So if I aim for about 6 coils of 0.15 (or a higher resistance) kanthal, I reckon I "should" be getting close. Any suggestions of wire? I'll need some more at the rate I'm getting through anyway!
On the up side I've been trying the Petar K way of making my coils and find that so much easier than wrapping it around the wick afterwards.

You could try this wire: Kanthal D - 0.16 mm - 10 m - 66.9 ohm/m from buymywire.com/You will need 4 cm of this wire to create approx 2.7 ohm. Taking wick diameter of 1.8 mm calcs would be: Cicrumference = π x D= 3.1416 x 1.8= 5.655 mm 5 coils = 5 x 5.655 = 28.275 mm = 2.83 cm Riser length -= 0.75 cm approximation but not too far off. If you want to calculate exact length see Dom's coil theory posts and work it out from the angle of the pitch. Length for connection = 0.2 cm x 2= 0.4 cm (once the wire touches the posts the length after will make no difference.) Total effective length= 2.83 + 0.75 + 0.4=4.08 cm 4.08 cm X .67 ohm/cm = 2.73 ohm. The resistance will get a bit higher as you use it. If you add or loose another half turn you can tweak it to +- 0.35 ohms per half turn.

Thanks Macca
At school I used to hate maths, now (thanks to Excel formulae) I bleedin' lov it!
I might have to make myself up a spreadsheet so I can guestimate what I'll get before all this palaver.

Or you could avoid the whole thing and just measure it and coil to taste.. That's what I usually do..

Wire ordered Now if I'm very neat... I reckon I'll use around 20cm to make each coil and I'll need a new one every week to 2 weeks. So... 10m will give me (10000 / 20 = 500 wicks. 52 weeks / 1.5 = 34.67 wicks per year. 500 / 34.67 = 14.42 year's worth of wire supplies. Next purchase date: May 2026 Cost per year: £3.22 / 14.42 years = 0.22p per year. See, my statistics are proof that making your own coils is cheaper! Damn! I forgot SS mesh! back to the drawing board

it's pennies per week. fractions of a penny per day. Or, to put it another way, bloody cheap as chips.

Wire ordered 10m will give me ( 10000 1000 / 20 = 500 50 wicks. FTFY

Damn again... That makes it 10 times more expensive & barely 2 years supply! I'll have to be more careful and possibly panic buy
