yes, if you get an browser error but the wifi icon stays green, it can mean your broadband connection is down. Sounds like another router restart ... when you go into admin on the router, can you find an option to update the firmware?

ok - its either channel interference or the wifi card on your notebook is poor.
Solution options: find a free channel or run the cable and get a switch or swap out the card (if you can) or get a wifi extender
What is guaranteed to work? Cable ...

Right....This morning, after telling my housemate the problem & what I intended to do, she has now informed me of further stuff that I was totally unaware of. Apparently her pc downstairs, which is connected to the router via ethernet cable, has also been playing up & losing connection for a while now, which is another spanner in the old greenhouse ( as they say.......well, they do on the planet I come from.... ). She tells me that the broadband supplied by Talk-Talk is really slow & apparently never shows over 1mb. She read out the upload & download speeds to me as they were showing on her pc this morning & they were 0.29 & 0.49 respectively. She says that Talk-Talk are supposed to be introducing a faster broadband package at some stage, which is obviously going to cost, but it seems, until then, that this may be the cause of the erratic connection.

It's not easy to give advice with little information but I can think of several things. First, anti-virus alone won't affect your connection but if it includes a firewall you need the correct port open. Most internet security programs do this for you when they detect wireless. Second, assuming you don't have a fault in your wireless harware, how far away from the router is the computer? Wireless sometimes has problems with walls, ceilings and longer distances. If that's it a wireless extender would fix it. If you have channel interference I'd have thought that all pcs would be affected equally. But you can try going through all channels until you get the best signal. For ethernet you need a hub, long enough ethernet cables to reach all pcs, and you can set up Internet Connection sharing if you need to, to tell all computers to use the same modem. I think you may need this as your router only has one port. Look for the connector on the pc that looks a little like a phone socket, you plug your ethernet cable into that. I think it's the one in the first picture in the link, but I'm typing quickly so haven't looked.
If you need more help. PM me. I used to work in IT.

Certainly not worth doing anything until you get a new package ... hopefully you'll get a new router as well

Thanks for the info Anna.....much appreciated...As I've said in my post above yours, it now seems that all the pc's, laptop & notebook are suffering from slow & intermittent connection, whether they are connected via wireless or ethernet. One of the pc's is less than 12 foot away from the router & that is connected via cable. It would seem the problem is with the broadband speed unless anyone can advise otherwise.

Last thing you can try is to disconnect the bband from the wall socket, switch off router, leave it for a couple of minutes and plug back in. I have had to do that to re-establish line speed with BT in the past

I have had to do that to re-establish line speed with BT in the past Apparently, my housemate did it a couple of times last night when she lost connection. She gets it back after she's done it, until she loses it again & repeats the procedure. I get mine back upstairs by right clicking on the icon in the taskbar & clicking repair. Seems we will have to suffer it until the new broadband speed is available.

Have you tried connecting directly to the broadband without using the router with different pc/laptops? Would rule out any problem with the router. I had to replace my old wired router a while back after having similar connection symptoms. If I used the (wired) router everything ground to a halt, but plugging in directly everything ran fine, regardless of whether it was pc or laptop plugged in.
Hope you get it sorted soon

If the Internet is dropping and not just the wireless try changing the micro filter, I have come across intermittent Internet issues caused my dodgy micro filters in the past.
