I don't think I have ever seen a multimeter. I certainly don't know how to use one but I need to buy one. A Google search shows me that the world is awash with them but they come in all shapes and sizes and can do allsorts. Can someone, please, point me to an idiot-proof multimeter suitable for checking AW IMR batteries (and I haven't a clue what AW IMR means except that they're the batteries for my Provari).

Thanks Vicuk and Sadie. It is cheap but postage is £8.99 which seems a bit steep to me. At least now I know what to look for so I'll print out that page and see if I can get one locally.
Sadie: I have the Provari Mini with extension cap. As usual, I did everything back to front and didn't think about battery safety until afterwords.

Make sure u take the standing resistance of ur particular meter so u can subtract that from each resistance check. You do this by touching the red and black points together and seeing the number. For instance, my standing resistance is 0.6.

I'l try and help, if i'm wrong , please guys tell me.(i've done some searches for you) mah= battery capacity Voltage=Voltage, also called electromotive force, is a quantitative expression of the potential difference in charge between two points in an electrical field. The greater the voltage, the greater the flow of electrical current Difference between Protected and unprotected batteries:The primary difference between the Protected and Unprotected batteries is that the protected batteries have a small circuit board, typically on the bottom of the battery, that stops the charging or discharge of the battery in certain circumstances. Some of the circumstances in which the circuit include: Over-Charge, Over-Discharge, Short-Circuit, and in some cases, overheating. The mods we buy may already be a 'protected' unit so people tend to buy unprotected batteries. some mod bodies have unprotected bodies, so you buy protected batteries (someone will have to confirm this)

IMR = It's a code used by the battery manufacturers for designating different kinds of lithium ion cell.
As far as I can understand it, it goes like this:
I = lithium ion C/M/F = cobalt/manganese/iron phosphate chemistry R = rechargeable(?)
Therefore,
ICR 18650 = lithium cobalt oxide (traditional) cylindrical cell IMR 18650 = lithium manganese oxide cylindrical cell IFR 18650 = lithium iron phosphate cylindrical cell
all of which are rechargeable lithium ion cells 18 mm diameter by 65 mm long, and each of which has different voltages and electrical properties.

For instance, my standing resistance is 0.6. Now you're getting technical. I'll see if I can figure out how to do that when I get it. Thanks for letting me know because I need all the advice I can get. I had hoped it was just a matter of putting the batteries in a slot that triggered some kind of warning light. That I would be so lucky!
