Roachie was right about using www.malwarebytes.org/Ive repaired a few laptops with similar problems to what your having and malewarebytes is a good place to start. With the laptops Ive repaired that keep crashing the problem is that people click on the link that says free software and what it does is install a programme on your computer, it then keeps crashing it and the objective is to buy their software to remove it. So when they say its free it isn't. malwarebytes will remove it, but you also need to look in your startup because it will load it everytime you restart your computer. Once you have doen the two tasks run a registry cleaner before you restart. Taking your PC to PCWorld etc will cost you a few bob and all they will do is format your drive and reinstall windows7, which you can do yourself. Make sure you make re-installation disks before formatting unless you got one with your laptop when you bought it.

Ive just looked at your specs and because its a netbook you won't have a disk drive, look in your manual at how to restore factory settings from booting.

Thanks alot everyone,i took it to PC World and they told me it was full of malware.I need to seriously sort out another anti virus other than norton then?I didnt realise it was so bad as PC World told me it was good I will also try saving my important data onto disks today as ive never bothered before.Luckily i took out insurance so the work was covered, also luckily they didnt have to wipe my pictures of the kids from my lappy I will admit that i am totally useless with computers when a problem arises but thanks alot for the help everyone.I will be visiting this thread alot in my quest to keep my lappy running well permanently,i dont want that to ever happen again. How does this malware cripple your system then?i virus scan it every week and honestly thought that should get rid of all viruses :-[

Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast for anti virus. Malawarebytes for malware scans Glary Utilities run once a week to keep machine running sweet.
This is what I've been doing for quite some time on my desktop and what I put on other peoples machines when I'm setting them up (I build and repair systems for friends).

So you took it PC World after all and they charged you. All you had to do was load malwarebytes to start with and it would have saved you some money. Norton is the best three is, you need to get Norton Internet Security, if you just have the Virus Checker then you can't expect it to find everything. You only get what you pay for. I'm glad you have it sorted but if you had read the posts on here it would have saved you some money.

Respect to Verey*, but: Do not throw good money after bad. Norton is just not tidy enough. Microsoft Security Essentials - AntiVirus MalwareBytes - Malware sweeper-upper (Windows Firewall - already installed) Advanced System Care - PC housekeeping or CCleaner or Glary Utilities SuperAntiSpyware - self explanatory Trusteer Rapport - protect your passwords, anti keylogger, anti screengrabber All free and all recommended by my PC repairman e-pal. NEVER SAVE ANYTHING TO C DRIVE - Install programs there, yes, but save data (pics, video, correspondence, etc) to a separate drive. If your PC is recent it should have been partitioned before you got it, but the trouble is that Windows' default saving options go to My Pictures, My Video, etc etc, on C drive > *That should read "Tyny", my view is still totally distorted scylla

Couldn't agree more Scylla,
I have dozens of IT professionals who I went to University with and I have known for decades working at various places and positions.
Not one of them would voluntarily use Norton or Mcaffee on any computer as they are expensive bloatware that hog system resources and slow your machine. The free software mentioned works better and normally rates higher in independent tests for protecting your machine.

Sorry but I must disagree, Norton used to block and slow up your PC but that was years ago. If you look in magazine and forum awards NIS has come out on top or 2nd place. I've been tinkering with computers for years and some of the free ones will do a very good job but if your constantly online and doing a lot of downloading then you need the best. I've been running NIS for nearly a year now on three computers and havent had any problems since I removed the free versions. So unless you have actually purchased it yourself and not just going on what was said on the grapevine then you won't really know.

I've been using PC since before windows was around, so have the aforementioned IT people I know. The only time they use Norton is when they have to for work. I have spent untold hours online, surfing, programming, doing peer2peer and many other activities and have never even had malware let alone a full blown virus using the free software. I agree Norton has improved in the last major revision but still uses more system resources than other software. The biggest thing for me Norton is VERY expensive compared to completely FREE. Any of the completely independant reviews I have read in the last 12 months from non profit/advertising driven/unaffiliated testing sites make it plain that yes Norton is good, it has detection rates about the same as Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast is only marginally behind. However when it comes to resource hogging Norton is much greedier than the other two.

No Tyne,i didnt have to pay for the work mate as i have whatever happens insurance.PC World told me that Norton will block most stuff but that some malware will get through ANY anti virus protection available ??? As ive said im not in the know with computers so to pay for cover seems a sensible option to me. They did tell me that Norton was about the best you can get and thats whats on my laptop. All i do is virus scan it once a week as thats all i thought had to be done.Im never gonna be a wiz kid with computers as i have only had my lappy 6 months and dont understand any of these technical terms if im honest

The main thing is you got it sorted mate and thats a good result. I repair computers from people at work and its amazing how many have no protection on their computers apart from what comes with windows. I would still download the free version of malwarebytes though and run that every now and again. Glad you got it sorted

Ok it seems you know best. Reading back I owe you an apology as I appear quite rabid. Sorry about that, I did not mean to be aggressive or put you down in any way. As you also said the main thing is his machine is working now.
