The OH and I are heading for the West Country on Saturday, and apart from visiting with Chrissie and her world famous cats, we don't have anything planned. We have never been to the West Country, (been and resided everywhere else in the British Isles) so please can anyone help with non touristy things to see?? I once went 40 miles out of my way to have a pint at the Glynn arms in Dudley, (known as the crooked house, you didn't need any more than a pint to feel unsteady!) So quirky and unusual would be great! Any Ideas greatly appreciated

Can't help you there, Kat. All I can say is I hope you two have a good time and post some pics in the picture thread when you return home.

If you are heading to Taunton i'd say a cider farm would be a good bet. There are loads of them round there and the cider is a million times nicer than the rubbish you get from pubs/supermarkets.

A cider with a z. Used to love scrumpy as my dad used to have an ex-army buddy who would send demijons of it. In later years exhibition cider was a nice mainstream alternative but for some reason it wasn't on sale for very long (9%abv 2 liters £1.38) that was about 1997 I think. I don't really like any of the ciders in bars as they just aint got enough flavour to them - especially now when bars chill everything into tastelessness.
As for stuff to do, can't really help since I haven't been for about 15 years - but heading north from Taunton and then going west along the coast is a splendid drive.

I love the taste of cider, but went to a place near Evesham, called the Monkey House. You paid a fiver for a glass and dipped into the barrels. Finishing the glass meant chewing the bits in the bottom. Half an hour later I was seeing little blue devils and then passed out whilst sitting at traffic lights DOH Verey, where has your avatar gone? Will follow the coast road thanks! River, I wish I COULD drink cider

I thought that Scrumpy might be the same as our hard cider. When I was younger, there were a lot of apple orchards around here. We would buy the hard cider right from the farmer. Nowadays, most of the farms are gone, replaced by houses.

Verey, where has your avatar gone? I can see my avatar, a lovely Lee Creation or do you mean one of the other ones I've used.

Kat the cider farm we went to did strawberry wine as well as the ciders. They also did a cider that was fermented in old Jack Daniels barrels and has a faint taste of JD that's nice. Sure you ain't tempted lol
