de-knurling?

Hi everyone.

What tried and tested methods are there for getting rid of knurling on stainless steel?

Specifically the knurling found on the mouthpiece of the terminator c

I want to turn this

Put pistol drill in a vice fasten it, put the mouthpiece tube into the chuck on the drill, switch on drill (slow speed), then using metal file or emery cloth, slowly work over the rotating area you wish to remove the knurling from.

If not drill available, fasten mouthpiece tube in vice and use file or emery to go slowly around the circumference of the knurling to be removed. Or use a `dremel` with grind wheel attachment.

Best get a m8 who can get to a metal lathe to do it for you

Put a small bolt through from the bottom with a piece of thick plastic, (I used the thick plastic from a strip of wall plugs cut to size with some scissors and a hole in the centre) over the bolt that comes out of the top of the drip tip then a small metal washer followed by a nut. You can then insert the bolt into the Chuck of a drill. Use some 240 grit aluminium oxide paper to get the knurling off then go on to 400 grit then 1000 wet and dry and finally 1200 wet and dry to give it a polished finish. It sounds like a lot of faff but only takes about 10 minutes. I used the above on an iclear 30 and also my Provari.

Luckily my dad has a decent metal lathe I can use to avoid faffing with a drill.. going over tomorrow afternoon mouthpieces in hand..

I was just curious as to what method (file, sandpaper, etc) would give a better finish.. he does have diamond tipped cutting bits but don't want to take too much material off..

Sorted!!

Saves me having to put tape on the mouthpiece! (Sounds silly but this was the thing I most wanted to avoid!)

If you've got access to a lathe then any cutter will do the job easily.

Thankfully he has plenty of experience with lathe work and so no matter what approach we take, it should work out fine and dandy..

Hated that lathe when he first got it.. had to manhandle it into his garage with nothing but sackbarrows(which broke!) and tow rope.. weighs a bloody tonne!

I do most of the little stuff like this on a bench grinder and finish on a pillar drill with wet and dry.

If you slip a long bolt through it with a couple of nuts and washers you can get just the right tension so it slowly rotates as as it grinds.

could always put a long bolt through it ,put nut and washer to clamp it then use excess thread to hold in drill or pillar drill and use a fine file and finish with fine emry,mind you will say have been removing top and o ring and filling steel chamber full with liquid as well save re filling just the clear

Hi guys.

So I turned up and told my dad what I wanted. 10 minutes later I had 5 de-knurled mouthpieces ready to clean and use.

Didnt need to faff around with sandpaper and files either.. just turned them down with the cutting tip and polished with a fine finishing block.

Result, no more ugly air bubble and they are definitely wicking better! Sorted!

I am trying to get it around my head what does de-knurling do to the juice drip tip? how can de-knurling make it wick better....you sir are confusing me

Also what ugly air bubbles, never seen one yet ???

Super-Shiny my dear fellow.

The knurling makes the base of the mouthpiece/juice control too large in diameter. This leaves the juice struggling to get down the gap between the mouthpiece base and the inner wall of the tank.

Simple fix is to skim off the knurling thus giving the juice more space to flow..

So you haven't had a big air bubble sitting at the top of the clear tank at any point?
