understanding batteries

Is there a post here that gives an insight into all the different types and ratings of batteries. I did a search but got no real depth. Or is there another site on the web that will supply this info.

Thanks for the all the info guys.  I've gone for an Efest Purple IMR 18650 3100 mah battery. That should be safe in the SID as it came with an Efest 2100.

You can use most batteries in a regulated device, it's really for mech mods that you need to know what's what, bad chemistry and no protection isn't so good

The purple efests you bought are rated at 20A. They will be fine down to as low as 0.4 ohms, as this leaves plenty of headroom. They are nice batteries and underrated by many people. I have personally ran them down at 0.3 ohms with little heat buildup on the battery. At 0.3 they actually stay cooler than my red efests at 15W on a vamo. The purples will do great in your SID.

Do the different colours on the batteries make a difference? Does it indicate different chemistry etc.?

The purple efests have a higher maximum safe drain than the reds sydsut. This makes them safer to use on sub ohm builds on mech mods.

There is no colour coding between different makes though, always best to check the spec and save a copy for each type of battery you buy for future reference.

Thanks for the replies and all the good info and the battery arrived this afternoon and has just finished charging as I'm typing. About 8 - 9 hours. Is this OK? Charger is an Xtar MP1S.

I believe that charger charges at .5a, which should take just over 6 hours to fully charge your 3100mah battery
But... batteries are not usually shipped completely flat... should arrive with about 40% charge
Cycle it a couple of times and see what the charge time is like

While it's true a lot of chargers state a 0.5A output, they dont charge at this rate all the time. The use different charge management strategies which aim to maximise the charge stored in the battery and/or minimise the wear and tear of the charge cycle. Generally, chargers use smaller currents as the battery approaches fuller charge.

A reasonable estimate is to divide the MAH rating by the stated output current then add 50% to get an estimated charge time, although this does vary between chemistry and chargers.

That being said, charge and use a few times as stated by leo and see if you find the charge time to be reasonable (6-9 hours perhaps)
