Jalapenos seem to be my nemesis, every year i decide that this is the year that i grow loads and pickle them so that i don't have to buy the rip off jars in Tesco. Every year there are not enough and the superhots flourish. I spend the rest of the year trying to get rid of lava like chilli vodka!

I made my Dad a bottle of chilli vodka 2 Christmases ago... it's still in his fridge... I wouldn't mind if he didn't love a bloody mary, he could've used it 5 times over in BMs by now!

I have just this week stuck some Chillies in a bottle of Vodka to make Chillie Vodka. I had no idea how many or which chillies to put in so I just split a few Birds Eye and some little pea sized Scotch Bonnet Chillies in. I hope it come out OK?

The beginnings of my first chilli of the year - hope you can make it out just poking through the flower head. This is on the one plant that was kept indoors last year and seems to have survived the winter in my kitchen. There is another one just about to show itself but too small to see in a photo, plus another 4 flowers almost fully open.

It takes a lot longer if you don't and you won't get the full infusion. 6 weeks in a dark cool place shaking once every 2 days. After that strain to remove the chillies and re-bottle. Oh and that vodka is too good to use, Tesco blue line all the way You can get incredible depth of flavour by using different types of chillies. My favourite is a hot fruity mix of Naga's and haberneros with a few jalapenos. I find that i get heat throughout the whole range with this mix rather than just the start or end. However it isn't for the faint hearted and no one has come back for a second shot. I have a mate that used to make chilli vodka that was ridiculously hot and i could never understand how he did it. It used to be a very dark colour and i later found out that he never used real chillies at all rather a capsicum concentrate.

Any updates people? Mine are all at around 7 inches tall (normal inches not man inches) but the Naga's are predictably slower growing.

This is a pic i took about a week and a half ago (and a poor pic at that). It's the plant that survived the winter on my windowsill. You should be able to make out a chilli or two and another three have appeared since then. They are all pretty small though. I'll pick the biggest ones in a day or two even though they are still green to try and encourage bigger ones later on. This years plants are coming on well and are in serious need of repotting. I will try and get a picture tomorrow if I remember, at work at the moment. Some of them are starting to flower already. Edited to add - that picture is truly shocking lol. It looked better full screen, honest

Gave away a few of my plants so only have four left, but have picked the first couple off each plant while they are still green. I always do this as I read somewhere it encourages the plants to fruit more and for longer. There were another couple that were just about ready to pick as well but thought this was enough for a start ......... All the plants have been kept inside on windowsills this year as the weather has been rubbish as usual but don't think they are doing too badly for it considering. How is everyone else's getting on this year ?
