My SO wants a "powerful" new desktop and I was thinking of getting him a Dell because I'm so out of touch and I haven't got the space to build one any more. If anything like Blakey's nightmare happened my feet wouldn't touch

If anything like Blakey's nightmare happened my feet wouldn't touch lol, it was nothing to do with the computer itself scilla, it was purely a software issue and could have happened on any pc running windows 7. For the record, dell make great comuters

I wouldn't bother with dell personally and it was my job to ''bother'' with them for quiet some time. This is why I wouldn't advise a dell. They are overpriced and tend to ''persuade'' you to stick with them as a company, they tend to be difficult and problematic to work on. I have a dell laptop (through the trade) but I wouldn't wish it on anybody overclockersuk will build you a PC to spec (IIRC)if you can't do so for any reason and this would be the place I would look, or ebuyer are always good.

I used to buy cast-off components from Overclockers' forum and I bought SO's last PC from eBuyer, but now I just don't know where to turn I'm convinced his current problems are mostly self-inflicted but can't get my hands on his PC.

A few months back, following a W7 update, my Avast antivirus wasn't recognized. I just ignored the 'warning' and and disabled the checking feature in the Security Centre so that I not longer get a warning. My antivirus is working perfectly - just isn't recognized. I had a similar 'irritation' with Windows XP; it seems to be a sort of 'false positive' thing that should be rectified during the next (or subsequent) updates.

I don't know your situation so I don't know if my advice would apply (or maybe you have thought of this and dismissed it as not an option) but if you are physically unable to get to your SO but the other computer is connected to the internet and you know your way around a computer; have you thought about setting up a remote desktop connection to find out if there is anything obvious you can do without having to physicaly touch/open the computer? It is fairly easy to do (depending on a few things)and once setup it is as though you are sat there using everything on the target computer. EDIT: remote assistance may be better in this case. If this is not an option, can't you instruct your SO on some things to look at/do, over the phone if need be? I expect none of this applies as there is probably some vital part of the story I am missing?

Well it had to happen , I'm so hissed off at having to reboot the old machine 4 or 5 times to get it working , I took the plunge and ordered a new bare bones pc ( no OS ) for an excellent price of £189 , I guess I'm going to have hours of fun (NOT) trying to transfer any info and progs across to the new machine , I'll also be upgrading to Win 7 which is a shame coz I love XP but hey ho .. transferring all my saved stuff to new pc will be a ball ache I guess coz I'm going to have to use an old raid card to plug my old ata drives into , damn progress , we don't like change Edit: I bet Blakey is chuckling his nuts off after his probs lol

Am I the only person that still uses the old "vacuum it if you keep getting BSOD's, and on the rare occasion that don't work, reformat the bugger" method?
Guess it's a bit hard with a laptop?

I use an old copy of Norton Ghost to make mirror image copies of my C drives. If they start playing up, I just un-ghost from the last backup and everything is fine again. I have a USB bullet drive on my key ring with a working copy of XP and Ghost on it. It takes a few minutes to restore a PC back to the last good backup.
I have to use Windoz 7 on my work machines to make sure everything is compatible with it. I use XP on my main server machine though. Best version of Windows ever.
