We've got molly fry They're so cute. Only thing is I don't know whether to leave them be, and risk them being eaten by the parents, or try to catch the ones we can and put them in a trap, risking stressing them out and hurting them Our aquarium is planted, and they seem to be doing ok in the really bushy plants. Hiding in there, they can get in and out, their parents can't. So I'm leaning towards leaving them alone. Anyone else keep fish? Yes alvo I do, got loads in the freezer as I love Fish Pie

They do anne, I've adopted guppy fry before, and they both look the same, especially if the mollies are light coloured. It seems mollies are born with more colour than guppies though, as my molly fry are black, and the guppies I had came white/clear and gained colour over the weeks. Plus once you see the guppies swim they are quite different. I've put them into a floating trap, didn't think about the light to be honest, but decided to put the more adventurous ones into the trap, as they were forever being chased around, and by everyone in there apart from the plecs, even the neons seemed to think they looked tasty. Funny you should say about the plecs being vegetarian, just had to explain that to my kids, as one of the fry had taken to following a plec around, and hiding under her. So, I now have some hiding in the plant (The clever ones???) and 7 in a fry trap. thought that was best, as my tank is planted, but not at all heavily planted, so I took Sandras advice. Anne, I'll look at finding some way to shield them from the light, it is quite intense, as it's a Juwel aquarium, with their newer T5 units. I don't plan on breeding btw, like I said, got these as a pair, who are always together, so couldn't bare to separate them, however once the fry can be sexed, I'll be removing the females, and putting them in another tank

Hopefully when (not if ) the fry survive, I can seperate the females off, so I'm not overrun. How do you tell which ones are Female? Do you get a magnifying glass and see which ones have lipstick on?

lmao Des, #icon_rofl# #icon_rofl# #icon_rofl# Gonna assume that was partly a serious question, aswell, if not then sorry. Basically the boy livebearers have a gonopodium towards the rear of their underside. In simple terms, we call it a backwards todger it's a very thin, backwards pointing fin like thingy.... where as in the same place, the girls have a full triangle shaped fin.

Hi all, I have a tropical aquarium with a few varieties off fish, including a solitary male Sailfin Mollie. I keep trying to pair it up with a female Mollie. Everyone I introduce a new female Mollie to the tank, it dies. Basically the male chases it around the tank that much trying to get laid, that it stresses the female out and she dies. I've lost that many females, that I can't risk putting any more in to the tank. Has anyone got any suggestions as to what to do. Cheers

Cheers A few females, he is prob exhausting her, if there are more female, they each will get a rest. Most live bearing fish need a lot less males to females coz their one mission in life is ah-hum doing it
