So I got my Pico kit with melo III mini tank. It came supplied with two Eleaf EC heads of 0.3 and 0.5 Ohm.
Sadly I'm not at all interested in sub-Ohming, so I purchaesed a couple of Triton 1.8 Ohm heads wich I happily vaped MTL with my 20mg juice at around 8.2 W.
Meanwhile I tried to rebuild (several times) one of the EC heads to a 1.8 Ohm coil but the results were horrible and left me coughing and spluttering, which I put down to my lack of experience building these heads.
Not being a great fan of buying coil heads, I googled around for an answer and found this:
(apologies fo rthe vulgarity of Vulgar Vape Dude)
It seems the key is the bottom pin, which on the Eleaf coils is desinged to be massive for DTL/sub-Ohming.
When I tried to swap a Triton pin into my newly rebuilt coil I found it didin't quite fit, even after swapping the grommet. Going the other way (eleaf to triton) does fit, but rather loosely.
Anyhoo, not to be stymied, I ordered a couple of eleaf ECR rebuildable heads. These are a simple horizontal coil design whch removes my hamfisted attempts at making vertical coils from the list of variables. Sadly, I got the same result - no matter what coil diameter, what guage of wire or how much or how little cotton I used, the result was always very dry and scratchy. Even with the airflow almost fully closed down, I still ended up coughing and spluttering.
So I gave up and put my thinking head on for a bit....

After some hours staring dolefully at the eleaf and triton centre pins I noticed that the eleaf pin has a square frame for the contact allowing any amount of air through into the cavernous centre hole about 3-4mm diameter straight through onto the coil. the airflow control on the tank isn't really fine enough to close it down to do MTL vaping on a 1.8 coil. On the Triton, the pin is solid with two tiny 1.5mm holes drilled into the sides. Now the airflow will depend on the area of thse holes and I figured that I could stopper down the eleaf pin to have the same airflow, then I might make some progress. Area = πd 12x2 (for the Triton) = πd 22 (for a single hole stopper) cancleiing the pi's 2d 12 = d 22or d 2 = sqrt (2d 12) Where d 1 is the size of the triton hole (1.5mm) and d 2 is the size of hole needed in the eleaf centre pin. (I know it's maths which we all hate, even me , but it's useful sometimes) Anyhoo, the magic number is 2.12mm which is the diameter of the hole I needed to have in the eleaf cantre pin. Rooting around in my bit box, I found the silicone plugs from the top of a cartomiser have a roughly 2mm hole , so, using the pin as a guide, I carved away the excess to fit with a sharo kinfe and plugged it inside the eleaf centre pin. Screwed back into the tank with a freshly built 2.5 mm diameter, 1.8 Ohm coil from 30 gauge nichrome and... Hey presto - it vapes perfecyl MTL with the airflow control wide open at 8.2W!! So that's the trick - stopper the centre pin down on the eleaf to 2mm and bob's your auntie. I will be making the same mod to the eleaf EC heads so that I can rebuild them as 1.8 Ohm vertical coil heads in the style of the Tritons. But that is for another day...

Congrats! Well done wrestling your gear into shape to work for you. With serious maths..... ME? I just did it by trial and error : linky I've found 2 mm MAX hole in that air intake tube directly under the coil works well for MTL and 1.6 to 1.8 mm works best for me. Which, as it happens, is the exact size of the hole in the center air intake tube on the Kayfun Lite.....and, if you want something newer, also matches one of the supplied replaceable air restrictors for the Cthulhu MTL RTA.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one that has trodden this path to madness Good job with the polycarbonate screws - that's some serious engineering you did, all I had was a box of bits and a sharp knife. Still we both got the result we wanted, which is the main thing.

I'm so glad I found this post 😀😀😀 I'm considering selling/trading my lovely new Pico with the Melo 3 tank because of the coils :-(
I'm not interested in sub ohmming and like you need a 1.8 coil. I'm using these in a 20w Istick just now at about 8w and that is working OK for me just now
Can you tell me please what triton coils I need? The man in the shop was all mini? Type1? Type2? I'm like ehhm no idea lol! I've had a look online but a lot of shops don't seem to have stock. Is this a bad sign?? Knowing my luck there's bound to be something else 😞 And making or retreading is way beyond my capabilities, I have no idea which holes you're referring to, could be a black hole far far away lol!! The whole Pico coil situation is making me feel like I'm in one of my own ⚫️

Hold on one cotton pickin' minute.
Eleaf make a coil called ECML. I was looking at them only yesterday.
Grrrr. Don't buy Aspire when you can buy Eleaf. It's an Eleaf tank too!
Google it - "Eleaf ECML" there's stuff on youtube. I can't link to it, because youtube doesn't work on my browser.

Or someone else who is familiar with the Melo 3. (Note different tanks will also fit the Pico as tanks and battery units almost all use same 510 thread to join together).

There certainly is a learning curve for vaping lesley1 .... unlike a match and cigarette.... but I assure you it's worth it. We're here to try to hold anyones hand that needs advice, to the best of our abilities and shared knowledge.

I'd like to say "forget the ohms" but maybe you have a point. Not sure on this one. Personally, I forget the ohms. In my world the expression Sub-ohm is as interesting as a Cat with it's paws on the world supply of marshmallows... it's almost meaningless. The only fly in the ointment is some lower resistance coils won't vape gently enough.
