shortening a MM510

i have 2 left hands made mostly of thumbs - which is why i am largely a concientious objector to DIY type jobs

however, in a moment of idiocy i decided to make a 3D printed mod and much to my chagrin i find i need to shorten the ModMaker squonking 510 pin so the bottle fits

my first question is what is the best way to cut 2-3mm off the pin? i was thinking something along the lines of a cutting disc on a drill - such as....

or is there a better alternative?

also in making the copper contacts... i need to make a ~12-13mm hole in the negative contact to fit round the MM510.
is a step drill the best way to achieve this? such as....


again - any advice or pointers appreciated.

then i'd just need to buy the bits and borrow a drill....

Your method of shortening the 510 pin looks the best way forward. Drilling the hole through the copper contact for the 510 itself, I'm not sure how effective a step drill bit is as I don't have one and have never used one. For this part I used a standard drill bit like this



Then used a burr like this to enlarge the hole to the required size

Are we talking a mechanical squonker?
Not used a modmaker 510 but having seen the pics if you cut 3mm off the tube you wont have sufficient tube length to use the brass screwy part & put the tube on.
Though you can get by not using the brass part you will need to put a bend in the contact sufficient to meet the tube.
Cutting disk is a good option if you have 1 available

I use a step drill to form my holes, do it on a scrap of wood.

the way i cut tube/bolts if they small nuff is put them in a batt op drill and run the drill whilst holding/resting a hack saw on it
you dont get any burs on the outside and a nice square cut

oh it helps if you run the drill the right way


dont forget to use something to clamp your contact to the wood before drilling or youll end up hurting your fingers A LOT

i had test fitted the MM510 from a Runt (as i was taking it apart to see how the contacts fitted the new mod) - turns out it has a longer centre pin than the new one that arrived from modmaker. A test fit of the new one has just about enough room to fit the bottle without cutting down the pin.

the one from the Runt has a knurled brass part above the smooth brass nut where your contacts touch - and the new one has 2 smooth brass nuts.

I think its the same 510 just the cap is knurled on 1 and smooth on the other, dunno if MM went for the smooth to reduce costs?

You can get away with switching the 510s round without having to modify anything then yeah?

The reason for The lack of knurling on the latest mm510 is so that you can fit the lock but in with the core installed. With the knurled but you couldn't do it

Success - eventually

first off - some decent scissors do the job much easier and better than anything else for cutting / shaping the sheet

in the end i went for a regular 13mm drill bit after drilling a pilot hole - and destroyed the first negative plate as it snagged and ripped it apart (i had secured it to a bit of wood with nails). for the second i went really - really slowly and although it kept snagging i got a working result although not the neatest hole.

bought 2 more bits of 36x18mm fine silver and had a chat to a guy a few doors down who is a retired engineer.

he said i had to 'back off' a drill bit so it grinds rather than cuts - and promptly searched through his 100s of drills - fired up a bench grinder and ground back the cutting edge of the bit the other way.

this did a perfect hole with virtually no snagging.
