ellen............ I usually give the mouthpiece a wipe around with a alcohol wipe then buff it with a soft cloth and it comes up nice and shiney Or if it is a bit more gungy, rinse with hot water and then buff.

I shouldnt think that the SS is wearing off ???

I get the gunk off with hot water and cotton buds, no problems there, but yes as Oneday described its like a blue tint, infact it's just like what's happened to a chrome drip tip I have, but it's a lot more severe on that thankfully, I would be horrified if Penelope ended up looking like it and I've started to worry its heading that way ???

I use a brake cleaner that I get from work, it cleans just about anything from anything
Then I just use some brasso or cape cod to shine it all up again.

Does any of that stuff affect the taste at all Blakey?

I can see me wandering lost around halfords tomorrow, I don't even own a car

It's a spray on cleaner ellen and it completely evaporates, being that the mouthpiece is stainless steel all you need to do after using any cleaner is rinse in hot water. The brasso is just to return the shine

I have a feeling the drip tip is solid stainless steel, and that the blueing is the result of the heat on it... any engineer types confirm?

That's right, but it can be controlled with regular cleaning with a good metal ploish.
