Jesus, dil knocked her sisters lappy of the kitchen worktop last night and its broked, packard bell 3 years old cost 400 quid, comes up with boot drive not found or some thing now. House ins excess is 60 quid is it worth claiming for it and then seeing if it can be fixed,or just get it fixed, or just buy another?

Speak to your insurers Blue. Most have a like-for-like replacement service (they have deals with all big manufacturers)

I take it was on when it was dropped? Means the hard disc (or something) is scratched, same happened to mine, itl cost around £60 to fix and a pc repair man should be able to save your files. Dont phone up your insurance company, they make you jump through hoops just to put your premiums up the following year.

the arm is usually in rest position off of the actual drive when not in use ...thats not to say it cant be knocked and damage the drive by the force of the drop but hopefully you will be ok ...if it does start working again then do a disc scan so that any bad or damaged sectors can be detected and avoided.

nah no joy, took out the drive cleaned the contacts and replaced, warnings vary between, no boot drive, no operating system and suchlike, it's gonna have to go to someone more puter savvy than me. You can go into f2 and the settings for drives etc, but that don't mean a lot to me

Last time that happened to me on a standard pc the mbr (master boot record ) had been damaged and corrupted .. had to replace the drive ...
Although it wasn't needed in my case I'm sure you can hook the drive up ( as a secondary drive ) if you need to recover anything.
