Expensive ouchy!!!

Cracked a bit off one of my molar's yesterday and i've been left with a very painful and sharp edged tooth that needs filling. Went to the dentist this morning, and first off had a very stroppy receptionist telling me that I should book in advance when I need to see a dentist, so I told her that I was sorry and in future i'd book an appointment a week before I decide to painfully break my tooth, and was then told it would cost £130 minimum to fix! £130???? My god. I'm not some stupid rap artist who wants it's filled with solid gold and encrusted with sparkly jewels, all I want is a flippin filling no bigger than the area coverage of a postage stamp. Think i'll do it myself, go to B&Q and buy some polyfilla, only costs a couple of quid.....

I'm convinced there's a special academy somewhere that trains receptionists for dentists and doctors. They are all the most obnoxious, customer un-friendly people IMO

I just couldn't believe the price. Maybe i'm getting old but I swear the last filling I had (some years ago now) only cost about £50 all in. As for doing it myself, It's either polyfilla or weetabix, because everyone knows that once weetabix goes solid it's like bloody concrete.

I think fillings are about £70 at my dentist and they are a good private practice. £130 is way too much.
In a pinch, find out where your nearest out of hours/emergency dentist is, get an appointment in the evening tell them it's causing you pain, they will treat you at NHS prices

Thanks Benny/Ellen. The trouble is they're no longer an NHS dentist, so their lovely receptionist informed me when I nearly keeled over at being told the cost, and as i've been lucky enough to not need any work done since I registered with them at the beginning of the summer, I am not eligible to get NHS prices so she told me, only private prices. So guess what, i'm in the process of finding a dentists that does take NHS patients, and they can go take their private prices and drill them until their hearts are content. I think this pleased the receptionist some what though, she looked at me as though I was some sort of unwashed miscreant when I dared to utter the word 'NHS'....

I know a lot of them look down on NHS patients, it really annoys me, I hope you can find a decent dentist accepting NHS patients near you, it's almost impossible where I live

I personally think that unless you earn mega bucks why on earth would you want to spend triple the amount of money on having the same work done? I just found a dentist that takes NHS patients up the road (recommended by the outlaws) and called to speak to them, their receptionist told me that their fillings start at £48 for the basic NHS filling, but if I want a white filling it could be a bit over £50, prob around £60-70 depending on how big an area it is - now that's more like it! So why would anyone pay £130+ if they didn't need to, just to say they have private work done? Beats me.

My last dentist always gave me grief about dental work. I kept having to remind him I was an NHS patient. Last bit of work I had done, he wanted £500 to do. I moved dentist and got it all done for £209. Nicer dentist, more gentle and the same result.

Bloody dentist's, i've just been back today, the root canal they re-did a couple of months back is still giving us gip, so first time back more antibiotics, and today he says, it's between doing the root canal again or going in from the side or underneath to get to the problem, he said it would have to be the root canal again, so now i wait 2 weeks for the next available appointment, still it is on the nhs. Better stock up on painkillers then

Theres not much worse than toothache!
In my case if I need dental work a bill doesnt get paid and the dentist and receptionists should give extra sympathy for that. I've just had to pay out £209 after I broke a front tooth and needed a partial denture. #icon_shoppingm#
