Depends which method you use to send payment I think, not positive, but different cards mean different charges, as do direct debits, and bank transfers etc. at least I think that is the case... I read that if it comes from some cards, then they charge, if it comes direct from bank / direct debit, then it's free to send gifts even with no money in paypal account.

does an extra 20 or 30p matter ? I know it's a bit of a pisser that it goes to paypal but at the end of the day your priority payment goes to the boy lets just be happy with that

Ok, how about an auction to run out tomorrow. Providing the purchaser is happy with goods, I'll then send the money less postage to gordy or perps. They can then donate. Would that work?
