OK, so I'm gathering up the courage here, but not rushing into anything. At this stage, I'm in the "asking dumb hypothetical questions" phase, so if you don't mind humouring me whilst backing away into a corner and making excuses about needing to wash your hair/having an appointment I'd be extremely grateful. Suppose in the early days of mixing you make a blend, only to discover that it's missing an ingredient you don't have? Let me put this another way. I only actually really like two flavours: Vanilla custard and peppermint. Three, if you count plain vanilla, but that's a second choice. I can see, however, that if I just buy PG/VG and those flavours, I may find my mixes are missing something. A sweetener may be necessary, I can see that, but what else? Forget the nicotine base, BTW, I'm going zero nicotine here. I don't want to find that I've made a mix and it tastes pants because it needs a certain something that I didn't buy in the first place. OTOH, I don't want to buy 1001 ingredients I don't really need. If my courage grows or my tastes change, then I will, and of course, there's always the classifieds on here to pass or sell on anything I buy that's useless, but if I can make sensible decisions (with your guidance) in the first place, then maybe I can avoid this. I know I could follow an existing recipe, and if that's the advice, then fine. I'm just worried that if that recipe isn't to my taste, then I may still be missing that other ingredient which may make it better.

Hi Kickit,
Well you know what flavours you like (at present), us recommending something for you that you will like within the flavour restraints you have stated is therefore very difficult.
But I guarantee that once you start experimenting you will find you like stuff that you would never have thought of in a 100 years, but to do that, you need to take a chance. That is what mixing is all about, for me anyway. There is no gain without risk (experimentation)...
However, I would say a few items that you will always find a use for are Ethyl Maltol, for use as a sweetener, Maybe some Menthol crystals to compliment the Peppermint, Chocolate, always goes well with Peppermint, and maybe a Banana to go with your Custard.

When mixing sweet liquids I think of things I like to eat, currently vaping liquorice toffee, or think back to my childhood (a long time back) for instance if money was a bit short we might just have custard with a blob of raspberry jam for pudding on a Sunday, suprisingly very nice. Dave

Thank you gentlemen. I guess initially I was just wondering if there's anything else as a "staple" I may find useful, and as Frogster mentions a couple of things, I'll definitely add those to my shopping list, thanks. My problem is that I have a limited sweet tooth. I really don't like banana flavour, for example (although I like real bananas, but have never tasted anything that isn't a real banana that tastes like one). I also dislike coconut flavours, or even coconut that's been through any sort of process. If it's just fallen off a tree, that's fine, I love it! I even have to specially ask at the hairdresser for them NOT to use a "coconut" shampoo because I can't stand the smell! So, as you can gather, I'm a fussy so-and-so, although I am one of the least fussy eaters you could ever wish to meet. :-[ I'll make a very slow, careful start and see where it leads me...

Dave What liquorice are you using? I've recently tried CCW's and find it very weak, even at 30%, which I feared would be the case when I opened the bottle and it hardly smelled at all.

Just done the tonge test of the two and F'Art is a sharper taste, CCW is a more mellow flavour but fuller, but thats to my taste. Dave
