Loby, I dry burn the wick in situ using the battery for a routine clean, after washing and drying with kitchen roll. To get a wick clean which is removed I just use a lighter. I am planning on taking some pics of how I wind a coil.

Sorry Brambles but I am still confused. I understand it all up to the point where you have eased the burnt wick out of the gunged up coil, but in the next shot we see the new wick and below it, the now clean coil, or rather the cleaner coil. What did you do to the coil to clean it up?

Oh sorry, I typed wick in 2nd sentence when I meant coil. Just put the coil in the edge of the flame of a lighter to burn the crud and carbon off it. ( I have gone back and edited the note with the photo.)
