Desktop Lathe

I am seriously considering a purchase of one of these
desktoplathes.com/1017-1

It would be amazing to be able to craft my own mods and I think this may just do the trick.

Back in Uni I was heavily involved in 3D printing and using AutoCAD with a robotic lathe. I created the 3D design on the computer and watched it do the rest. I have never used one by hand but thought it is something I would LOVE to try. Anyone else had any luck with such things?

I thought this at just short of $500 is amazing as I was expecting even a desktop one to cost more than £1000.

Is that a US website ? what would shipping costs be on a lathe as they're aren't light ?

Got my eye on a Clarke CL300M once i've put the pennies away for it.

The Clarke would be a better bet, I suspect you would end up needing the Tail stock, Among many other things, like a dead centre, bench grinder to sharpen the lathe tools etc etc.

That's just one of the bad points, the one Mev said is a far better deal for the money, just compair the two. I not even looked at any others.

It would probably work out cheaper to draw up your design on a cad program and then pass it on to a small engineering firm to make it up for you. As long as they have the correct taps and dies for the treads you require it wouldn't cost you an arm and a leg. When I left school, for the first 5 years or so I worked in the machine shop. I then moved on to other parts of the firm. Eventually they closed the machine shop and the chaps who worked there were allowed to keep all the kit and they set up on there own. I still keep in contact with them so if you draw a design up I could give it to them to get you a price on it.

Cheers Meeee, I will keep that in mind. I have a few ideas in the works at the moment but not currently transferred it to CAD. I am tempted to put one together and use my friends 3D printer to get a look at what a final finish would look like. I will see if I can put a texture over the mesh and upload a photo, though at present it is a mix of ideas saved in one project.

For someone self employed as an engineer to make something like this would not be cost effective for a one off for someone to buy.

Not unless the person in question is willing to pay for something that would be a one off design. you know, something that you can say was designed solely by yourself. Sometimes that alone is worth the cost.

I agree probably not as a 1 off, but if you had a few made this would lower the costs per unit quite considerably. A lot of it would be down to how complicated the design would be.

As an engineer myself I have thought about this, and to be realistic at the end of the day I would rather just pay the going rate for a mod that already exists.
