Vaping is all about what works for you. The good news is that you have you have found it already. Forget the mesh wicks and use silica (or try cotton) on your AGA. There is nothing dumb or unsophisticated about enjoying a 4 Watt vape on a cheap device.
You've arrived mate enjoy it.

I think it is all about wicking. Your SS wick cant suck the liquid up as fast as the silica wick for some reason. The sleeving goes over the SS wick and then the coil is wound over that. So you cant get any electrical connection with the SS wick and cant get any shorts. But if your SS wick isnt feeding as much liquid to the coil as the silica wick then the coil will start to dry and get hotter. Then it will get almost red hot and burn what is left on the coil. There are a lot of pics of coils on the web that are red hot, but if you are getting a good vape from any coil, it wont ever be red hot because it would then be burning and too dry. The liquid actually cools the coil so it doesnt ever get red hot. So if there isnt enough liquid getting sucked up it cant keep the coil wet all of the time. So to my way of thinking, your SS wick isnt sucking up enough liquid. Maybe the 400 mesh will sort it for you, good luck. If I am talking small spherical objects, please forgive me, I am only just up and my head isnt working yet ;-) cross posts @tazmania441 lol I agree rob wick is eather to tight to slack or wrong grade for my liquid

It is getting a short from the coil to the chassis via the wick mate, but I have to try that Putting the top back on possible moves the wick a little. Maybe bend the wick away from where the top joins with the bottom?

Maybe bend the wick away from where the top joins with the bottom? it must be rob ive shortened the wick a little and now it only drops from 1.8 to 1.6 not sure how safe it is so just using it on my lava tube it has protection i assumed once the wick was oxidized it wouldn't conduct electricity i cant see anyway of stopping it if that is the case as i screw top down its fin untill the last 3 threads ill mess some more

I thought of doing it once, was gonna make something to line the bottom of the tank bit to stop any shorts, but never got round to it.

if you try it all i did was use the old wick already oxidized rolled it slack a little, slipped in a paper clip then coiled it around a watch screw driver to make an s shape make sure you coil it the way it will curve in the phoenix then i shortened the legs so wick is probably around 30mm long now the ss wick is defiantly touching the out side of the phoenix but dint think it would matter maybe that's why no one els has made an s shape before

The oxidation can wear away quite easily, even with the coil rubbing against it, the oxidation is only microns thick and then you are down to conductive metal once it gets worn down a bit

Yes, and try moving the ends of the wick so the sharp end of it isnt touching the tanky bit of the Phoenix, you may even get away with just unscrewing the coil ends, taking it all out and oxidising it all together without having to rewind

well robby Ive had another go when i took the ss wick out i could see shiny ss marks where the cap had screwed down so striped it re oxidized holding it in shape with pliers then re wicked it and also used some filler fluff out of a cartomizer twisted it like a thread and wedged it around the out side to stop the wick touching its working sort of defeats the object of a ss wick just had to make a video will upload shortly
