Here's a quick pic of mine, I think it turned out prettier than the one on the recipe It would benefit from some greaseproof paper or liner of some kind, it did stick a bit on the base despite greasing.

Looks nice Jen. Did you have it with anything? I popped to Tesco earlier to buy a couple of the ingrediants I was missing to make it, not made it yet though but I did make some soda bread I couldn't beleive the price of cooking apples £2 odd a kilo! So I bought value apples lol

We had vanilla ice cream with it, but whipped or pouring cream would be just as nice I reckon. Cor - soda bread! Never made that, is it easy/nice? I fancy some sourdough, but then there's all that faff with cultures and whatnot. So lazy! You only need 3 apples for this one - it's why I made it cos I had 3 bruised ones lying around I have also changed my mind about the lining, picking the chewy stuck on bits has got to be part of the experience

All these recipes sound lovely. I get depressed though as I am diabetic. I dare not make cakes at home as I have no self control and would end up so unwell I'd have to go to bed! LOL Yes I could, but the carbs in the flour have an effect too, as carbs turn into glucose in the body. I'd be ok having just a slice, but I just know it wouldn't end there!

Oh I see, displaying my ignorance there! No, definitely don't make it, one slice is not enough

You only need 3 apples for this one - it's why I made it cos I had 3 bruised ones lying around I have also changed my mind about the lining, picking the chewy stuck on bits has got to be part of the experience Sod that, get it ate woman! I bought vanilla ice cream as well to go with it, sounds more appealing than cream. The soda bread was my first ever, I have made normal bread many times though so not completely new to bread making. It is SO flippin easy to make its silly! lol. Here is the Gordon Ramsey recipe I used. SODA BREAD MAKES 1 LOAF This traditional Irish loaf uses bicarbonate of soda instead of yeast as its raising agent. The advantage is that you don’t have to wait for it to rise or prove, but the resulting loaf will not keep as long and is best eaten the same day. If you can’t buy buttermilk, use ordinary milk instead, but add a level teaspoon of cream of tartar. 350g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 150g wholemeal flour 1½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 tsp table salt 1 tsp caster sugar 450ml buttermilk 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/Gas 6. 2. Sift the dry ingredients into a bowl and make a well in the middle. Reserve 2 tablespoons of the buttermilk and add the rest to the bowl, mixing lightly with a fork as you add it. (Be careful not to overwork the dough but make sure all the dry ingredients are mixed in. Add the remaining buttermilk if necessary.) 3. Tip the dough on to a floured work surface and knead gently for 30 seconds to combine. Do not overwork. Line a baking sheet with baking paper and dust with flour. Form the bread into a round, place on the tray and flatten slightly. Use a serrated knife to cut a deep cross in the top of the loaf. 4. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 30–35 minutes until the soda bread is golden on the outside and cooked through. A good way to check is by tapping the base – it should sound hollow when cooked. 5. Cool on a wire rack before enjoying warm or cold. My results. The dough The loaf. I didn't cut the cross deep enough but it still tastes bloody gorgeous with some Yum spread and strawberry jam on!

I might have to whip that up this weekend, looks lush! The bread maker just don't cut it no more! Does it taste of, erm, soda? Or different to yeasty breads? I had to not scoff the whole apple thing as hubby is expecting some for his pudding tonight, the selfish git I'm making coriander chicken stir fry tonight - slurp!

No it doesn't taste of soda, it smells very different once cut and you have a good sniff of it. It tastes very much like yeasty bread but a firmer texture yet still nice and fluffy You could have eaten all the apple torte and just said you didn't make it
