Microsoft Security Essentials for free : in the same league as most free AVs without the system bloat. AVG turned to crap when it was bought out. ESET for Paid : I regularly submit virus samples to Jotti and Virus Total which runs the file past most virus scanners, ESET has the best record against 0-day samples in my experience. Everyone should send their samples to Jotti (or VirusTotal) because when malware is detected on one AV, the report is sent to all the vendors who can then update their definitions, therefore everyone benefits no matter which AV is being used. virusscan.jotti.org/

That's good advice googled, also, would you recommend running malwarebytes free download as a secondary back-up?

IMHO Don't pay for AVG, i wouldn't even use the free version anymore, it's bloated, slow and is "nagware" (in my opinion), Avast does a brilliant job for me, and the internet security isn't necessary, Windows Firewall etc provides enough protection for me,
And technically your router will guard you to some extent also.

My personal choice for Windows OS is Comodo Internet Security Suite. It's free, full featured and includes auto sandboxing for unknown executables. Another useful addition is a ' Virtual Machine' type of environment where you can test run apps before letting them loose on your machine.
