They have been working on next gen batteries for about ten years.
Some based on sodium ion seem promising but they have trouble so far getting performance past 50 or so recharge cycles.
Potassium ion is also being looked at but also has issues so for.
Lithium air is interesting as it has much higher energy density but is difficult to get working right.

Possibly in the next ten years we shall have batteries with at least double the energy density (twice the power/mAh) but for now we will just be seeing small advances in the current lithium batteries as they improve materials and manufacturing used.

I know I sell them but any thing with the DNA 20D in pretty much wees on them all (in my opinion)
