He has a crate, but he got very possessive over it, so under advice of a behavourist he is only allowed access to it at night. He does have a separate basket to sleep in day and night. Unfortunately we only have 3 rooms downstairs large kitchen/dinner, a large lounge and a utility room where the cats get fed. I think when he has his open I will move his crate into the lounge and keep everyone else out. Really worried as I have been told he could get worse while he is in pain. A blanket over the top is a very good idea, thank you. I am closing my shop for the day so I can prepare for him coming home and to see to his needs. He very rarely comes on the sofas which I am very pleased about, he is not allowed upstairs that is totally out of bounds. Glad his behaviour is probably not due to vaping as its the only thing that I seem to do for myself nowadays. I'm no doggy behaviourist, but if he feels safe in his crate it seems a shame to not allow him access during the day. I'm not sure what you mean about possesive? He should allow you to clean it and feed him in there, but if it's his safe space he should be allowed peace away from children etc! My dog was neither up nor down after his op, the biggest problem at the time was getting him into the car to get him to the vets If you'd told me than that Max would happily travel 250miles in the car to go on holiday I'd have thought you mad!

Completely agree with you Karma . . . especially if he's calmer in it.

The Crate only works f you haven't used it as a punishment though, my westie even now has doggy playpen(never shut though) he uses when he goes there it like him telling us "i want some peace" we call him when he is in there but never invade his little space unnecessarily . I used to watch Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan & found some useful tips , he is just a natural with dogs

He won't allow anyone in his crate to clean it. If I move the mattress slightly he growls and goes to bite and has made contact, I heed the warning and stop (for now). I have been taught how to get him used to me touching his crate and am slowly working on him letting me touch it. The problem started when my 2 year old god son came over and was swinging on the crate door and banging it, my dog hates loud noises and gets reactive to them. I shut the door and my nephew then played with the catch! Then my daughters ex boyfriend thought it was funny when the dog went for his feet as a warning when he played and banged the door. So now as usual I am the one left to deal with the problem. The crate never has and never will be used as a punishment. I have never even locked him in there went we have gone out. I consider myself very lucky as he has not chewed furniture, doors, skirting boards etc, pencils, the odd pen and yes my sons homework I am going to move his bed into the lounge where it is much quieter during the day for him, everyone else can stay in the dinning which gets used a lot more by everyone. I have heard a lot of good and bad about CM a lot of people say don't listen to him, including my vet who specialised in animal behaviour. I don't know why as I have not seen any of his programs or read anything about him. My puppy and I have a long week ahead, he has to trust me touching his crate.

We used to have a border collie when I was little. They are very bright dogs and need lots of exercise and stimulation otherwise they get bored and hyper. We got our ridgeback some of the brain toys by Nina Ottosson. The dog has to work out how to do the puzzle to get his treats. Our ridgeback is so laid back now it is unbelievable but they used to keep her out of mischief when she was a puppy and she really enjoyed working them out. They might be ideal for a collie who likes to use his brain too. I'm not too keen on CM myself either but from what I've seen he really believes in the dog getting exercise and this seems to stop many problems with dogs being hyper due to boredom. I believe in the reward method of trying to catch your puppy being good and rewarding him even if he is just lying being quiet and doing nothing in particular. He is still being good because he isn't tearing your furniture to bits. This sounds like a good idea. Maybe things are a little too hectic for him when he wants some peace which is why he is possessive over his crate. I'm not dog expert by any stretch of the imagination so take all I say with a pinch of salt, just some of my initial thoughts. I wish you all the best with your pup and hope he settles down very soon.

I use a lot of reward based training with him, if he settles I give him treats and say 'settle' and 'good boy' He does get plenty of exercise and even though I have to work I manage to fit in several short training sessions throughout the day, its the late afternoons and evenings when he gets hyper which is when I am around him more vaping (hence asking about effects of vaping on dogs) I tried taking him out for an early evening walk but he was still as hyper, even after dog training both sessions are 1 hour long he is still hyper. No walk for him this morning unfortunately as I did something to my hip last night. Hopefully will take him out when I finish work before cooking tonight. I love my walks with him.

Oh, I hope you haven't done anything serious to your hip. The only change in behaviour I've noticed in my dog is that she used to stay away from cigarettes. However, sometimes she tries to sniff at my mouth now when I am vaping. She only seems to do it with some flavours. She obviously has her favourite flavours too.

My Labs never liked smoke from stinkies I was always treated to the sneezey shake of the head at the slightest whiff..but vapour doesn't bother them at all, my 8 month old will actually try to catch vapour My only advice to zeldamum would be. At all times be kind, stay quiet, stay calm... but be deliberate. Cleaning his cage or moving his mattress should not be up for debate. just do it. My granfather bred and trained Labs and Spaniels for gundogs, I loved watching him with the dogs he never raised his voice, was always kind, quiet, patient and kept calm no matter what. The dogs adored him. My father was the same with horses.. I remember one day watching 6 men trying to put an 18 hand Shire into a lorry/float. The horse wasn't for any of it, he was rearing up and dancing about. They had 2 lead ropes on him with a man at either side of his head and a strap round his behind with two men trying to physicaly drag him up the ramp. They also had two men with a gate each trying to close the gap at the back of him down so he had no place to go but forward up the ramp. When dad turned up the horse was kicking and rearing with eyes rolling.. he was shaking and sweating (as were the men). He walked forward took the horse led him away into the corner of the yard.. cracked away to him quietly while rubbing him down with straw. Once he had settled down dad led him round in a big circle lining him up with the ramp and led him straight into the box with absolutely no fuss. I couldn't believe it! when I asked him later how he did it he said... I wanted him to go into the box and he knew it Moral of the story...Stay calm, stay quiet be kind but be deliberate. Goodluck

No nothing that a few pain killers won't solve, just over done it for the last few days. I always talk to him in a calm voice and we have to move slowly around the house anyway as he reacts to fast moving objects (his instincts kick on otherwise). Just found out another of the litter has just been done for the same reasons. Also found out there has been in breeding going on. Which may be causing the instincts to be so strong. Thank you everyone:)

Hmmm, I wonder if you got him from the same place as a neighbour of mine got his Border Collie from? Although his dog isn't what I would call hyper, he does have several behaviour problems - including being very possessive. He actually attacked me quite badly a few years ago

Oh no gjdart. He would probably love a friend to play with, I don't think I could cope with 2 of him.
You never know Chrissie, not sure how long the person has been breeding them for.
I am determined to calm him down/channel his energy into something positive, hence the agility. He doesn't make it easy. Which for me means the rewards will hopefully be bigger when he does finally calm down enough to forget his collie instincts for 5 seconds, he is so cute on walks, before his hormones kicked in he used to walk staring at me for treats, so much so that he would trip up over everything:) Now of course he just pulls to sniff and scent everything in his path.
He does a great high 5.

Thank you I have bookmarked the group for when I can find out my yahoo login in details on my computer. What breed and how old is your puppy? Crate has been cleaned and new mattress has been put in it. He hasn't slept on it yet. He did get his walk, thankfully hip pain had gone by this afternoon:)

Toby is a JRT/Pug cross.
He seems to have avoided the good points of both breeds.
I think he has the sensitivity of a brick and has Tasmanian devil in his gene pool.
He's 16 months old and I love the bones of him, although I'm not always keen on the bits of him that cover them.
He's brave and bright and I am probably too old to appreciate him fully.
And then he does something incredibly sweet and I can forgive him anything...
