A friend of mine has FUBAR's his laptop so he's give it to me to have a look at. He does not have any disks with the computer and when it starts up it POSTS ok but then tries to go into recovery mode but fails. I have been able to ascertain the registry is knackered, I've downloaded Hiren's CD and and I can load it and the mini XP operating system but I don't know what program to use to try and fix the registry. I'd like to make a recovery CD but I was wondering if I made a recovery CD on my Windows 8 machine, could I use this on his Windows 7 machine?

Des, From another site " A system repair disc is not the same as a OEM factory recovery/restore disc. A system repair disc is not an installation disc. You cannot do a repair install or install Windows 7 with a system repair disc. A system repair disc can only be used to repair Windows 7 through the system recovery options. 32-bit System Repair Disc can only be created on a 32-bit Windows 7. 64-bit System Repair Disc can only be created on a 64-bit Windows 7. 32-bit System Repair Disc can only be used to repair a 32-bit Windows 7. 64-bit System Repair Disc can only be used to repair a 64-bit Windows 7."
Depending on the age of the hardware and the condition of the data, it may be a more efficient use of your time to reformat and reinstall from zero.
Good luck
BTW, do you have access to a working win7 box?

It's a pretty new Laptop and my mate does not want to lose all the Data on there, so I'd try a repair first. I don't have a Win 7 box.

Des, If he doesn't have a back up of the data, then the first priority is to get his data secure. I would remove the HD, copy the data to a back-up location , reinstall the HD and then try the recovery procedure. But I need to ask, what happened? WHY did a pretty new computer shit the bed? Update?, physical drop? user error? Is the computer 32 or 64 bit? I

What make is the laptop? Many manufactures create a recovery partition on them which allows you to reinstall windows from it rather than requiring a cd?

I have to agree with izan, whip out the HD and copy the data. Then you can do whatever you like to the HD without fear of data loss.

Des, the rescue ISO is only 150mb. Find on TPB, pull the torrent and burn. Just need to know if it is 32 or 64 bit win 7.
good luck I

izan raid2506 meeeeThanks for your suggestions Guys, I downloaded a system Rescue Disk and tried that but and I can access the recovery console but I get "you must enable system protection on this drive" and I tried accessing rstrui.exe from the CMD prompt without success (many years since I did anything in DOS). I checked with the Guy who's Laptop it is and there's nothing on there that he really needs to keep so I am going to try re-installing Windows @storm is helping me out on this as I have a product key but no disk at the moment. I'll let you know how I get on.

If it happens again sometimes a Linux live CD can run in RAM and allow you to back up data without changing the hard disk - Ubuntu is often a good choice www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
