This one was recommended to me from MSE- ADWcleaner, it is free and it has solved my problems. Plus my Adobe reader needed updating. A lot of people are having the same problem during the Christmas period apparently. I have had Avast and Comodore, I didn't like them they were too invasive.
Thanks for your replies.

As well as Avast (sorry, daveyboy37!) and MBAS, I have Spybot which nearly always finds something the others haven't. Funny, I had a good cleanup of my laptop yesterday, and found a couple of things which were better quarantined - no idea where they came from, but better to be safe rather than sorry! No need to apologise.. I personally don't use any of them. What's more... I must be really tired because to quote Robby's signature..."I'm talking Bollox" There is nothing at all wrong with Avast... It was AVG free version that has gone to sh*t, not avast... I need to sleep. Shame I'm at work til 7. Phew, you had me worried for a minute there daveyboy37 Completely agree though that AVG lost it a few years back & I've used Avast ever since.

(((( daveyboy37 )))) I so often have days like that, as I'm sure everyone else does In fact, I remember posting something similar on a forum soon after changing from AVG to Avast - i.e. I got it completely the wrong way round

Yeah, in my case I like to think its tiredness.. It's probably senility tho. Especially seeing as when someone asks me to sort their 2 year old laptop complete with spyware and trojans with included 3 month McAfee antivirus trial well expired, I actually install Avast or MSE.

Two more pop-ups that are annoying me, Bubble dock and Peep Prices, but, have removed them from Chrome with the help of tools extentions. I can do simple things like this because I have a simple mind when it comes to anything techy on my PC.

I find AVAST to be the best and easiest to install maintain for my customers.
NOD32 is my AV of choice though.
For spyware/Adware and Scareware, I just use Advanced System Care and for clients I bang on SpyBot.
For Firewall, Agnitum Outpost.

the problem with picking an av prog is that you have to weigh up 1. detections 2. the user 3. how easy/intuitive it is to use and 4. how much system resource it uses compared to the spec of the pc it is being used on. The 4 main free progs are Avira, Avast, AVG and MSE. 1. detections - performance varies with almost every round of testing. AV-Comparatives is probably the best benchmark for this. Generally, MSE is the worst of the four, the other three are forever leapfrogging over each other. However, to put it into perspective, all usually score >90% in testing. 2. the user - if it's someone who needs "fire and forget" like older or less tech-savvy people, MSE and Avira are better than the other two. Avast and AVG tend to need more hands-on for setup and alerts. 3. Ease of use - personally I like Avira, as it's more highly-configurable than the rest. Avast went more and then less configureable in the latest versions. AVG is a bit of a pig to set up, and MSE has hardly any setting s to tweak. 4. System Resource - in terms of RAM and processor useage, Avast is the lightest of the four, followed by AVG, MSE and Avira in that order. Confirmed after back-to-back testing on the same machine(which I do on a regular basis when new program versions are released). I'm actually surprised at how heavy in comparison Avira has become, but it's a quality product. Along with an AV, various other anti-malware progs are out there, MAlwareBytes Anti-MAlware being the best of them. SAS and Spybot tend to pick up on a lot of cookies in their detections, which are harmless enough, but on occasion pick up something others have missed. Use as many of these as you want, a lot depends on how paranoid you are. Remember, no matter how god a single av or am product is, it'll never catch 100% of all the nasties out there in the wild, so sensible surfing is always a must

keep a clean install of windows, be careful what you install and run. Best thing to do if things get slow and messed up is to wipe and make a clean install. It only takes a few hours

And Combofix and RKill for times when it all goes wrong just exercise caution using Combofix if you aren't familiar with it....it is more "fire & forget" than it used to be, but caution still required

It only takes a few hours First thing I do after installing a new version of Windows (with all my usual stuff, freshly installed) is take an image of it on DVD and a restore disc. Re-installation takes half an hour, then.
