I work in primary schools, and I can tell you for nothing that after 4.30pm the younger children are good for nothing. Most of them are in bed by 7pm, and they are mentally burnt out by the end of school. If the government really want to propose this, perhaps they would like to pay teachers for all the extra hours of lesson preparation, supervision and stress-induced illness that this will entail. Those of you who think teachers have an easy ride, think again. If you have 2 children (the average), times that by 15 and keep those 30 children actively engaged and purposefully learning for 8 hours, whilst planning, assessing and reporting on their progress (all individually), and accounting for different learning methods and levels of ability, and then tell me that teaching is easy. I am fortunate in that I am a peripatetic music teacher so my pupils are the ones who want to learn, and I have the utmost respect for class teachers who have to accommodate all 30 pupils in their class for 5 days a week. Oh, and by the way, much has been said of the burning out of the pupils with such long proposed school days - what about the poor teachers!!?

I'd prefer free after school sports or other play type activities on a optional basis. Rather than simply trying to teach knackered kids! Then people could still work as needed.

Ludicrous suggestion. I can see many parents turning to 'home schooling' is this ever took off. Teachers would be spending more time with the children than parents!
