Whilst I am not bothered what the NHS class me as, I object most strongly about insurance companies questioning me about my lifestyle. They just want to take as much of your money as possible and hang onto it come what may.
So to the health mob, I am a Vaper. To the insurance companies I am a non smoker.
At the end of the day it is just a play on words which we toy with as the occasion arises.

I would think of it like, is someone using patches or nrt a smoker which i would say no. So vaping would not classify as smoking to me its just another way to get my nicotine. My doctor also classifies me as a nonsmoker

I went to my docs a couple of weeks ago for a medication check up and she asked me if i smoked. I said i use an ecig these days and havent used a tobacco product for nearly 2 years. She said to me that she thought that was classed as a non smoker and amended my records to show the fact.

I have to go to GP once every six months for a prescription review, each time i'm asked "are you still smoking 20 a day" each time I reply stopped smoking "insert time", each time they say well done we'll update records, 6 months later same question, so waste of time.
As for insurance, told my private health company non smoker, but those B*****ds will use any excuse not to pay, so assume they'll use ex smoker as excuse for non payment, self inflicted years ago.

It is all very well our doctors etc. classing us as non smokers, but the NHS has not laid out any official designation on what e-cigs and the using of these are. Only once they rule on e-cigs will what is put on your medical records count.
So overnight I could go from being a Smoker to a Non Smoker to a Vaper to being a Whatever without me doing anything at all.
I know what I am and that is all that matters. What other people think or designate me is their problem, not mine.

On the other hand, if you are approaching retirement age and need to purchase an annuity with your private pension pot, you are likely to get a better income if you declare yourself to be a smoker, simply because you aren't considered likely to live as long as a non-smoker.
For me that would be true because if I didn't vape then I would smoke.....

Yeh you're right lynwlt That's had me considering....I'm wondering if it'd be worth a few stinkies when the time comes... assuming I ever get that far! Having said that any nonsmoker might want to take up the evil weed....albeit briefly...

Catch 22.
Don't mess with insurance companies.
Next time you renew or take out a policy, explain to them, let them classify you for better or worse.
An insurance policy isn't worth the paper it's written on if you withhold any relevant information. They will probably see Vaping as relevant, even if we think that's a crock of sh**
Hopefully, this will be cleared up soon enough. Until then, assume nothing.

Insurance is a minefield , they will use any get out clause to avoid payment ! I know of a case where they refused to pay out due to wrong height being stated ! I'm sticking with smoker unless clear legislation in the future makes it crystal clear

Hiya all A big thankyou to everyone who replied. There are some really good points and views being brought up but it sounds to me as though the jury's still out on this one lol! My doctor has put me down as a non-smoker but on NRT so as far as insurance companies etc. are concerned, that's what I'm going to say. Why do they have to make it so bloody complicated! Surely if it's not 'smoke' that's being inhaled then you should be classed as a non-smoker, even if you're still 'inhaling' nicotine. Hopefully, the insurance companies etc. will update their policies regarding nicotine and all the different ways it can be taken so they can change their policies depending on the individuals way of taking it and adjust their different kinds of cover accordingly. I really don't know the ins and outs lol! Thanks everyone and kindest regards, Elly

My doctor and dentist both have me down as a non smoker, even though they are fully aware that I am a vaper
