Random question ........ ??

I just wondered if I'm the only person who 'scrambles' when ever they hear the roar of a low flying aeroplane and dashes to the nearest window to see if I can catch a glimpse of it ? Is this normal behavior for a human being ? or .... am I as some people suggest ...  'weird' ?

Nah I do it too lol. Sometimes we have the red arrows fly directly over. Very rarley the vulcan. So if I here a jet or 9 I scramble like an raf base under attack! Tallyho!

No wibble I do it too! We are a bit spoilt as like you we live fairly close to a military air station, so RNAS Culdrose has Sea Kings, Merlins, Apaches and other sundry helicopters as well as the awesome Chinooks, and RAF St Mawgan has the occasional RAF fast jet and Hercules doing one of its 'below the valley top' passes which never ceases to thrill.
That coupled with a good mix of commercial flights into Newquay and 35,000' out- and in-bound flights to London and the rest of the UK, and my 'Planefinder' app gets a good workout most days of the week!!

Edit: forgot to mention that Culdrose have a squadron of Hawk fast jets based there which act as airborne threats for Navy ships training in the Western Approaches and also fly to the ranges near RAF Valley for target practice. Apparently they can fly low enough with the correct radar trace to replicate an airborne missile incoming - must be fun for those naval ratings on radar duty! There is also the RA Navigation School flying Gulfstreams, which are also based at Culdrose, along with the occasional Harrier which land and take off on the Airdeck Training School; this trains naval personnel to be able to operate on aircraft carriers, which would be really useful if we actually had any!

I live close-ish to a flight path and only notice the really loud ones. Helicopters are rare so I go looking then too.

The normal commercial flights don't have the 'scramble' effect on me ... but like just then I have no idea what it was but poor JD got thrown of my lap (JD the dog by the way, I'm not drinking just yet lol). Nice to know I'm not weird though - or if I am at least I'm not alone

Me too - every time.

When I lived near the Ivinghoe Beacon in Bedfordshire the Battle of Britain flight used to fly past - low - fairly often in summer. SIX Merlin engines

No such luck but we do have the police helicopter and the only thing I am scrambling for is more pillows to drown the bloody noise out.

I used to love it when I lived at RAF Lyneham and the Hercs used to fly over the back garden all the time.

Totally normal behaviour wibble done it for about 50 years now, used to get supersonic tests going on in the 60's now it's the Red Arrows etc when there's an air show on, it just never gets old

similar to chykensa we seem to be on the low level training route, and yes we do run outside to see what it is, the worst one I have encoutered was a Hercules doing a low level night flight... I had just been down to check the cattery (around midnight) and walking back up to the house noticed 2 bright white lights approaching me, in the darkness it looked like he skimmed our rooftop but must have been higher, and yes I ducked

You're quite normal, wibble, have the Mirage fly over here & if I was quick enough, I would do the same. Where I lived here before, they used to fly & dogfight extremely low & once, when I was outside, one inverted & I must admit, that made me s*** myself, as I could see the guys inside. Thankfully neither waved or else I would have fainted. lol

We have had 4 low passes heading for Porton Down this afternoon alone and also on the flight path of the tomahawks from Middle Wallop

I always used to like going for a nose around if I knew we were handling anything out of the ordinary at Stansted
or getting a trip to a military airfield was a rare treat. I always look up for aircraft, you never know what's passing you by.
My younger brother is a member of the BA B777 gliding club, he got to meet the queen for that.
