Can someone please confirm/remind me.... I want to order some more batteries, now idf my memory serves me right I need protected batteries for a mech mod and unprotected for a vv/vw, is that right? also how do I know if I need flat top or button top? and lastly... I was looking for 18350 so I can use my mods in a 'shorter' mode but I cant find them on Focalecig, dont they sell them Foclecig or am I not looking in the right place (I'm presuming after yesterdays message that Focal are now able to ship batteries to the UK again) One day I'm going to know all these things and stop asking questions

Yes Q you are correct, unprotected for VV/VW mods (which have circuitry built in to protect you), and protected IMR batteries for Mech Mods. As far as flat v. nipple top, probably best to ask with regard to a particular mod, and where you got it from if possible, as I know from experience that not all clones of a mod are the same!! Personally speaking I would pay a bit extra now and buy batteries from the UK - two companies to look out for on eBay are Torchy and Ecolux (I have recently bought from the latter with great service and prices!). I'm sure someone will be able to post links to these two sellers as I don't have links to hand!

The safe specs for just about any battery can be found with a little bit of a google.

Q Complete list of suitable batteries and which type to use here
Protected batteries have built in protection, because the manufacturers deemed it necessary due to their more volatile nature when put under stress. Unprotected batteries have no built in protection, because manufacturers deem it unnecessary due to them being less volatile under stress, and the unlikelihood of them bursting into flames ect.
Either can be used but I know which I would prefer to have just in case I have a problem occur. (that would be IMR unprotected) Hybrid batteries also fall into this 'safer' category like the Sony VTC's.

The whole battery subject is confusing, there is some great info in this thread by hijack The confusion stems from the word 'protected.' It's misleading to say 'unprotected' for vv/vw mods, though I understand why you have. The batteries options are IMR, (use in all mods.) Protected ICR (use in mech mod if you wish, I wouldn't) and hybrid, (use in all mods). Protected ICR batteries have a protection circuit because of their inherent danger. The chemistry of an IMR is deemed to be safe enough not to require this protection circuit. afaik there is know such thing as a protected IMR

I use unprotected batteries also in my mech mods - the purple efest ones are also good and you get them from myepack - the advantage of the flat tops are that you can use them in any mod - some mech mods have no space for buttom top ones
