right just found this and good choice on your start up there is no right or wrong in this hobby of ours except maybe the rules are as follows if you don't know then ask and
1) safety
2) follow rule 1 at all times
check your charger if its 500ma use it
if its 800-850ma use it but be careful whilst you get one
if its 2.0 - 2.4a DONT USE FOR E-CIGS
if you cannot work out what the rating is just buy a replacement they are very cheap a lot cheaper than the roll of wallpaper that will burn off your wall don't want to frighten anybody but remember rule 1 at all times

You've done your research which is commendable, and you are already sorted by the time you read this, so well done, and here's hoping that you and your flatmate get off, and stay off, the stinkies!
You have also found that we are a helpful bunch and knowledgeable too, so do what you have already done and keep on asking, we know most of the answers between us and are more than willing to help new vapers and old hands alike, as you've discovered.

The gear should arrive tomorrow, according to the tracking notification I received. Not opening until his birthday on Saturday, though, and thereafter may be too busy experimenting to remember to come back to update you all, though I will surely be back for more friendly advice!

We both smoke about 75g of rolling tobacco a month, I occasionally smoke JPS Silver tailormades on a night out (and will go through 20 easily). He used to smoke Drum Blue but is now on Amber Leaf, I was on B&H Silver, now on Amber Leaf Blonde.

I still haven't started looking at juices. How many should I get to begin with? Are there any pretty safe bets I could grab a larger size of just to be sure I never ran out?

OK - 'twas me that asked how much you smoked, so as a comparison, when I started vaping, I used to smoke about 75g drum a WEEK.
I started with 18 & 24mg juice. I now mix my own at 7.2mg!

I'd guess you'd want about 18mg to start? Someone else chime in, please, as I may be off the mark!

Did you see ronaldo 's post up there about charger plugs? He knows his stuff, so I'd follow his advice on all things electrical!

You could get 24mg and if its too strong dilute it down with PG.. the flavour will weaken doing it like that but it will give you an idea of what strength to go for... if you buy too low a MG you would have to start adding nicotine which is more expensive than PG.... i would go with what fred says.... 18 to 24  i wasted i lot of money buying it too weak... i should have gone the strongest route and diluted it.... the mistake i made was, my ciggy packet said 11mg on the side so thats what i bought... it didnt quite work out like that.....lol

I smoked 60 Embassy Regal a day and went on 24mg I still vape 24mg even now but some of my juices are 18mg and I don't notice much difference so in future I will buy 18mg but I would start on 24mg if I was you and I know tobacco dosent taste like tobacco but I started on Virginia and ry4 and I am still on them I love vaping tobacco I wouldn't start vaping with anything sweet at the beginning as I think it would put you off vaping but what do I know I can only state facts about electronics

18mg would be a good bet to start with - there is no real comparison between cigs and e-juice as the absorption and delivery methods are completely different. Put it this way, it is safer for you to vape more often than to smoke, so try a bottle of each. You might find you vape more in the first few days anyway, so make sure you have enough juice to last you both - you can't just pop down to the corner shop for some more (although more and more places are starting to sell juice now!).
Go for a variety of flavours too; fruits, menthol (even if you didn't like menthol filters/cigs), dessert types and even coffee and drink flavours like Red Bull and cola - there are hundreds of different flavours, your quest is to find a few that you like.

MG is milligrammes ...and if you do need to buy PG you need usp grade... RY4 is like a tobacco based with a caramel type flavour... i think.. ronaldo will tell you better, i used to use it but when i switched to using drippers all the time i found it quite sickly... Virginia im assuming he means Golden Virginia... i used to use that too but went off it also.....lol... taste is so subjective, it really is trial and error, what flavour do you think you would like ?

What's the VG/PG thing? I think I'll try 5 each: 1 x tobacco, 1 x menthol, 1 x fruit, 1 x dessert, 1 x another tobacco/other

The tobaccos we like are upthread (though my all time favourite cigarettes are Sovereign Lights, now sadly discontinued). I thought I might like a vanilla one, and was erring towards a cherry one for him, but undecided as to other options.

Will be getting all in 18mg to begin with. Will the airflow control be useful here if the vape is too weak/strong?

spot on they are 2 common tobaccos ry4 is sold literally everywhere juice is sold I think it must be the most common and Virginia is golden Virginia get 2 or 3 different tobaccos and a bottle of menthol then as you start to go off it put a few drops only in your tobacco and it changes the flavour so you never get bored
