@windows thanks - I like the Type R, but I'm too old for that stuff nowadays & I know that a car like that will have had the balls revved out of it, whereas the Civic & the others on my shortlist probably won't have quite so much.
It's funny - one minute I'm like "oh it's GOT to be the Civic", then "it's GOT to be the Avensis", then "the Accord" ....
Arghhhhhhhhh hahahahaha

Does he want to sell it? I might go for a drive into South Wales, because apparently the cars are cheaper there than where I live

Have you considered Mazdas? With the exception of the RX-8 they are super reliable and tend to be a really good drive too. Didn't I have to push your car piddy to get it started!! (Mazda MX5) Actually I've had a couple of Mazda 6's and Kathy has had a RX8 and a couple of MX5's They are GREAT cars I'm replacing mine next month but could not get another 6 on my companies budget I was gutted

As you only do around 7k per year, and looks like mostly small journeys, you would probably be best going for a petrol. There is little fuel savings to be had with town driving when considering diesel vs petrol, especially taking the cost difference of the two fuels into account, but there is some. As I'm a geek for fuel economy, I have a little spreadsheet made up for calculating exact differences and stuff like that for exactly this sort of comparison. A petrol averaging 30 mpg compared to a diesel averaging 40 mpg comes out at £290 per year difference. If you take 35 mpg for petrol and 45 for diesel it's down to £216, and at 40 vs 50 the difference is only £165 per year. I suspect, with similar driving styles, 10 mpg between petrol and diesel would be fair. Unless you are doing a lot of motorway work.
But then the tax and insurance might be slightly cheaper on the diesel, whereas the purchase price will likely be higher. So overall costs may be around the same over 5-8 years ownership. But the petrol is less likely to have costly failures like turbos and DPF's etc...
5 miles on the motorway is not enough for a DPF regen, as that takes 15 mins above 2k rpm. At £4k you wont be overly likely to be in the realms of a DPF diesel anyway though, so less to worry about. As for nothing going wrong with diesels, whilst that is generally true, when things do go wrong, they are generally more expensive. Turbo's and DPF's aint all that cheap.
Diesels are more expensive to buy anyway, and while they do hold their value better anyway, you mentioned your current car you've had for 8 years. So whatever you buy, it will have paid for itself by the time you are finished with it anyway, so any residual value can be negated.
With that in mind, you will likely find a newer, or at least lower mileage example of a petrol car for your budget. Which should work well for you anyway. In your shoes I would go petrol. But I can't advise on which one, as I have very little interest in Japanese cars.

Cheers Des - I just went on the Autotrader site & looked for Mazda 6's - one of the garages listed there was in Bedminster where I bought one of my earlier cars & after they didn't fix the car I'd bought from them, the police were involved after "threats" were made & I had my car fixed for nothing hahahahaha Then my wife wrote it off

Do you know, I changed the starter, got a new alternator and still was having issues. Turned out all I needed was a new battery. 20 years old and thats all that has ever gone wrong on the old girl. Taking her to get a new roof at the weekend to make sure she stays happy!
Thanks for the push btw
