I only use my desktop very occasionally, about once a month, I'm more comfortable in the lounge (ha ha, you can't really call it a lounge) with my laptop. As I use it daily, I obviously don't notice the various updates. Tonight, I fired up the desktop, and it's taken over an hour to be able to use it... Norton updates... Adobe updates... Firefox updates... Windows updates... most requiring restarts. Hey ho, just a rant... there are bigger problems out there.

Blame the hackers/virus givers etc etc...plus the updates are normally fixing something from feedback from users.

I for some reason HATE laptops, flimsy crappy things IMO, gimme a desktop p.c anyday.

I just hanker back to the ZX81 and the cassette tapes, what a great time... no threat from 'idiot' hackers... we could all do our thing. Times have changed, and I don't like it. May they all (the hackers) disentegrate up their own backsides, unless they 'contribute' to the benefit of all.

You got me nostalgic for my old bbc micro...used to love programming it and making my own hardware. The raspberry PI is bringing some of that back to today's kids. Oh, for the sound of my old C64s SID chip blasting out turrican, ghosts and goblins and forbidden forest. No updates needed in those days. Programmers fif their job effectively, no bloat and proper testing. Software publishers these days (glaring at you microtrash) don't have adequate testing plans or quality control. Updates will be needed to counteract malware or support new hardware, but there is no excuse for updates being needed to fix broken functionality or memory leaks etc. That's just down to poor testing and the publishers desire to rush the product onto the market and start filling their greasy little pockets.

Taking my (broken) desktop to a computer literate mate next week for an upgrade - it's on XP Pro but wnat to discover if I can at least get to W7 (don't like W8, too new for an old git like me!). He's a Microsoft qualified engineer and can access the complete MS database and download whichever OS he wants with a few clicks. He never uses a mouse and types code as quickly as I am typing this - top guy! Laptops are flimsy, yes, but they have their uses. I think I might get some funny looks if I carted my desktop into schools to do my online registers or play a video clip for the kids!
