OK, so I never leave my batteries charging overnight, or when I'm out. However, I've gotten to the stage where there are so many things to charge via USB cable in our house that I just use whatever charger is to hand. I don't really know any more which charger good with what. Things being charged are phones, tablets and e cigs. How dangerous is this? Is it worth me having a big sort out??

Safety should always come first so yes I would check everything

What are you charging lal? Are they ego style batteries? If so, you must make sure that the charger does not exceed 500mah output. Anything above this is charging your batteries at too high a rate, which will shorten their life and, worst case scenario, risks a fire. My iPad charges at 2amps, so this is 4 times higher than is safe to use with an ego. Very risky! I suggest having a good sort out - it's only got to go wrong once to be catastrophic.

I'm normally one of the people preaching safety. However - I personally think we've got a bit paranoid over battery safety. In our house we have two laptops, a tablet, a kindle, three phones, three ipods, a couple of bluetooth headsets and a couple of pairs of portable speakers - all of which need charging regularly. That's without mentioning e-cigs. I just plug whatever needs charging into the nearest available charger otherwise every plug socket and usb port would be taken up.

Hmmm, I have had experience of batteries exploding in a ball of flames in my bedroom over night, I was just drifting off to sleep so if I didn't hear it fizz and pop I might not be writing this to you now. Some care is needed.

Now I have not taken an ego charger lead apart BUT you must imagine there is an actual charging circuit inside the little black boxy bit. You can not JUST charge lipo batteries by applying 5v to them from any usb socket, there needs to be some sort of regulatory device in the charging cable (which is the little black box) There also needs to be some kind of sensing circuit in there too or it would just keep pumping out the (higher than nominal voltage) of the battery. there are different ways eg NIMH battery chargers sense when charge is complete (the dip) on nimh i believe. What I'm trying to say is that in any battery charger, be it a usb ego or a all singing all dancing multiple battery charger there must be provisions built in to prevent over charge and limit the current to an appropriate amperage for said charge. Has anyone ever actually measured the current draw from a usb socket charging an ego to see if they do draw more current when connected to an output capable of delivering a higher current. I very much doubt it would. But I'm open for a slagging and be told I'm talking shoite. I'm just typing out loud. PS: I left my 2 x batteries on charge last night, and the Hudl charging, and both computers and the baby laptop, and the fridge freezer, sky box, tv, 2 x home telephones, the cooker clock and the bt broadband wifi box. I only have one rule. Charge e-cigs with e-cig chargers AND e-cigs mains adapters.

there is only two ways of looking at this everyone has left a video recorder on when they were popular left your washer on and went to the pub leave your fridge /freezer on computer /modem on I have and I will often as these all have internal protection they are all controlled by safety circuits I know I work with this circuitry every day and I trust that it does a safe job
then there is ego circuitry it does its job and does it well up to 500ma I have seen ego chargers that have came from china that allow 2000 ma through them so the choice is yours
1) charge safely and enjoy vaping 2) charge however you like we will read about your case in the daily fail and maybe attend your funeral

Until I signed up here I didn't realise how dangerous it was to leave batteries charging overnight or when out of the house. NOW I KNOW thanks to others on here and especially ronaldo. Never do it now

Not saying don't be safe peeps. Last night was the first time i just left both batteries charging overnight (on top of the cooker mind) Lipo Bag in a box in loft somewhere. Normally a charger is in the same room as me but you can't always be there to watch them ! Stick your charger in a lipo charging bag for added safety. Ruffie. PS: ronaldo I hadn't thought even a CE approved ego charging cable would allow 2 amp to flow to the battery. 20 min charge and a very very hot battery. I stand corrected.

I wouldn't of thought it a good idea to put a charger in a charging bag, surely it's safer to have air flow around your charger.

But, the chargers we use and the batteries we all use should not be getting that hot. It's not like we are charging 30c 11.1v 5000mah lipo's here.

yes I have seen a lot of defective ego chargers and the thing is you don't know what you have got just by looking at them and just because you buy them in faith from a reputable vendor sometimes they have no control over what they get for sale and don't even know that there chargers are not safe them people add to that by plugging them into really high power outputs and that's when the danger arises so if we regulate them from safe wall chargers to 500ma even if you did have a defective lead the danger has been eliminated remember the two important rules
1) Safety 2) check rule one

A lot of CE markings you see on china export actually stands for China Export, theres a slight difference between the two CE markings, mainly the C is incomplete... Now millions of lith batts are sold[said this before] there is a good chance 5% will go wrong thermal, even chargers.theey has been reports on the Dreamliner problems all lith related,Apple products,Sony Laptops all had lit probs, hence when using your lappy when batts charged they advise remove it if using mains power only, how many of you do Ferrari a while back had a prob with there cars combusting--yet even with paper spread they still sold We all leave stuff on standby tv's etc they can short and go thermal, hence why we should all unplug My daughter playing on her PC,the power supply went thermal no warning poof burst into flames!!! Nothing is 100% falable not to go wrong ,just someone will be the unlucky, and then something or someone will make a general meal out of it! Common sense should make everyone who charges anything should respect it and never leave to charge unattended or over night------ old advert Electricity kills!!! says it all really........ On a mostly male note for those with no shed/garage------- how many have charged a car battery in the kitchen? not have a window open, walk in nxt morn cig in mouth[before you vaped lol] switched kettle on or cooked a fry up------not exactly bright idea gases from battery go boom...... So basic anything with electricity you use common sense respect it If something goes wrong your part of the percentage If when you have that ego burst while using it,then maybe battery getting hot should have told you NOT to use it--again common sense Charging batts if they feel warm remove it let it cool on a plate or even take it outside to the garden--- your choice if you want to rettry it but if it does start to warm, repeat and then get rid of it So basic all horror ecig stories i just think wonder how many used Common Sense!! Also PC's with usb 3,like mine i can increase volts for apple products that use 1.1v more than normal chargers
