Sue, If the compressed air doesn't work might want to invest a notebook cooler it makes a big difference In the past I have used various laptops with the laptop just resting on my legs and sometimes I would have to turn the laptop off due to the heat on my legs, never understood why they were named as they can't be used on your laptop. if you thinking about buying a new laptop I would give the main high street stores a miss

just be really careful sue1952 - don't have it switched on unattended - a lot of house fires are caused by over heated laptops - go to pc world or curries and have it checked pc world and currys is the last place on earth that you want to take your laptop to unless you have very deep pockets

Have you tried it on a table top..does it still get hot? I have heard that those laptop cushion type things are not good, they prevent the air circulating and overheat.

whilst the air duster can give a tempory reprieve, all it does is blow the accumulated furry slug that builds up between the fan housing and the heatsink back into the fan.... guess what'll happen in short-time? yep, the fan will blow it back to the same place, blocking it up again. The only real way to cure it is to take either the fan housing or the heatsink out enough to remove said furry slug from that area, then all will be calm again How easy/hard to do depends on the lappy and how it's been designed, most of them are easy as the area in question is under one of the removable base covers. Others have been positioned so a full strip-down is required to access it. In all my years of fixing pc & lappys, I've only ever had one lappy fan actually broken, all other occurrances have been down to dust & fluff build-up. what exact model number is the lappy?

Hi GunJack it's an HP G56. I've had it for about 7 years, bought it when I retired. I have replaced the big battery underneath a few weeks ago and that has remedied the notice I kept getting telling me the battery was very low. It has been getting hot for a few months now, but has been getting hotter in the last couple of weeks, so definitely needs sorting out. Thank you for your help.......................Sue

Many thanks GunJack , I think I will take it to the puter shop and let them do it or ask son-in-law, I am not confident to do it alone. Many thanks for your help............Sue

Most laptop fans aren't capable of cooling a laptop sufficiently on their own, most laptops rely on convection to cool hence the body of the laptop gets very warm, when the laptop shut down its probably because the processor reached its "TJ Max" temperture and it was shut down to save the processor, if your using it on a tray with no air flow, especially if the tray has raised sides it can cause warm air to circulate back into the laptop and further increase the temperture, download the application SpeedFan and RealTemp and they will give pretty good readings on the temp.

My bet is dust build up as said above. Like said a airduster may be enough to get it working ok ish again, but best way is to dismantle and blast the dust off. Laptops are fiddley to dismantle and put back together so best to take to a pc shop... but will charge a bit of coin, or do you know anyone who does this sorta thing?

They are indeed fiddly, and each one is very different to the last, unless you know what you're doing or are comfortable with fiddling then take it to a shop like boyofford says.

I use it on a laptray whilst sitting on the sofa vinny41. On occasion it has switched itself off because of the heat. If I feel it getting to hot I turn it off and wait for it to cool down. Right nuisance it is too............Sue

I would think to take the laptop apart remove any dust and re-assemble cost will be in the region of £70 and that where it gets difficult spending £70 on a laptop that is 7 years old or putting that £70 towards to a new laptop approx. £150-£190 depending on your requirements
