My SD Mk2 suddenly failed and when I took it apart, found the spring (atty end) had fried- the wire appeared burnt and the spring had compressed. I understand that this safety feature kicks in if the battery mis-fires/shorts in some way. The battery was about 4 months old and had given no problems before. Had been using an adapter with a bud tank atomiser. I have pulled the spring back out but feel a bit worried now I just don't understand why it happened in the first place ???

The adapter I'd say at a guess was responsible Beepsie for causing a short.

Thanks Perps. It's just a regular normal tiny one piece 901>510 adapter. Still lost and confused though

Don't ask me the mechanics of how an adapter can do this Beepsie, but I've read of several people who have had this happen because of an adapter . . . I believe Raggy had the same with one of his Screwdriver's.

I've also heard of adapters causing shorts but don't really understand why. I believe a dodgy atomiser can also do it.

Beeps, if the wire looks burnt I wouldn't recommend using it. Go over to ukv and pm trog, he'll mend it for you and doesn't charge much. Better safe than sorry.

There is a rubber seal inside adapters battery connections and atomisers that stops the + touching the - if this wears or gets juice or water build up over it then the battery will short out - the problem is without testing each item it's hard to know which item has gone wrong .. it can be tested by a multi tester that detects continuity basically if you put both testing probes together it will give a reading to show that they connect - put one probe on the center pin and one on the outer ring (without a battery in) and these should show no connection being made if it shows a connection you know both parts are shorting together and that piece can be chucked (no idea if this would work with the atty or not but should work fine with the adapter) I have been known to be wrong - sometimes about everything so if you're reading this and im wrong feel free to correct me lol

Well thanks for your thoughts- I got this Screwdriver from TW just over two years ago methinks. I have just been reading something about an adapter that had caused this very problem in a Screwdriver. Prof refers though to a 'two part' adapter causing the problem. This was just a regular little piece of metal and no leaky bits. ???
