This may be a daft question, but am I right in thinking that as a coil wears out does the resistance(ohms)get higher.

More often than not crud is deposited on the coil and this raises the resistance. If you have a type of atty that you can take apart the head then remove the wick, dry burn (you wil see the crud burn off) re wick and you're goodto go again. wil7985

When you heat them red the surface oxidises and the slowly get thinner (if you ever use ribbon kanthal on a genesis you can see this with the naked eye) and I suspect the the structure of the metal degrades over time with the constant hot/cold cycle.
