Hi I bought some 1.7 kanthal micro coils off eBay and after trying them in a few protanks they are giving me a burnt rubber taste. I tried them on a dropper and no problems. They are great coils. Any ideas why they would be burning the grommet and how to stop it. I checked for hot spots and dry burned before putting the cotton in. Any help much appreciated

The current runs through the wire FROM the 510 connector and then through the wire that comes into contact with the insulator and all of the wire from that point is resistance wire and therefor subject to heating up with the current The only sure fire way to stop the burning is to use no-res wire for the leg that comes into contact with it

Most premade coils have non-resistance legs which prevent the grommet from heating up (because the wire in contact with them doesn't) It might be a wicking issue, but it doesn't sound like it. Fasttech do a wide range of NR-R-NR coils www.fasttech.com/search?NR-R-NR

Most new heads have a silicon grommet now to replace the old style rubber ones. If yours is silicon and not rubber you may have a wicking problem. I use resistance kanthal in my protanks and only get that burnt taste if I put to much cotton in and it restricts the flow of juice to the coil.

I've some silicone grommets ordered from america which I hope will fix the problem. I've been getting jonco to rebuild my coils and as far as I know he doesn't use no res res no res wires and the grommets were the stock rubber that came with them. All the coils he done me were fine. Just thought I'd give it a go with some premade ones on eBay myself. So I'm just really confused as to why they are burning the grommets now.

hijack has a point there, try a little less cotton through the coil. If there is too much cotton in there then it's possible that the legs could heat up faster than the coil itself

Why didn't you grab some off me at vapefest? I'll bring some to Prestleigh for you. After the night I'd had on the Cider & Rum before Phil, I was lucky to get my head to Vapefest - let alone actually remember anything with it. That's ever so kind of you, thank you.

Thanks that's very kind of u Just to let you know these are very good as they are silicone. One tip you should be aware of , they seem just a tiny bit larger than the stock ones.So , when you put the grommet in , you need to wet it slightly so it goes in a lot easier , as silicone is slightly sticky in texture , so when it's wet it makes it a lot less sticky aiding installation.
