Newbie - advice please

Hi all

Found the forum through the moneysavingexpert forums and I understand you are a friendly helpful bunch. I am after some advice please.

I gave up smoking about two months ago, but am still using nicotine gum off and on. Over Xmas I have had a few cigars, but I was happy doing that and felt in control. I am back at work tomorrow, which is when I struggle most. I want to ditch the gum, as it's expensive and it gives me a headache chewing all the time.

So, I have started to look at ecigs. I have got myself totally confused.

I want something small and easily carried that I can use just a few times through the day. Some of the ecigs look pretty large. I also want something cost effective - I don't want to pump a lot in straight away and find I don't like/use it or stop using it pretty quickly. To be honest, if I do like them I don't see myself carrying on using it beyond 6 months or so. It's really just to help me with the net few months realisation of being a non smoker.

I hope all this makes sense!

So having done quite a bit of reading, I found the SD Keyring, which seems to be well liked and fits the bill. It also is cheap (too cheap???). Do you think it fits my requirements?

With that one, can I buy some liquid and refill the carts myself rather than buying refills? What do you recommend? I have most recently been smoking roll ups, but used to smoke B&H and Marlboro Lights although would prefer higher levels of nicotine to start with.

Do I need to buy anything else other than the basic kit and the refill liquid?

Finally, where's best to buy these bits from?

Hi Superdon & Welcome

The SD keyring is a great piece of kit, small with bags of vapour, taste and throat hit I have one and love it.

It's a good starting point for a "casual vaper" and will fit in your fist. If you only want to take a few puffs through the working day it would be ideal. However you may want to get 2 kits, why? well you could have one on charge whilst you use another. Otherwise beleive me there's nothing more annoying in waiting the 2 - 3 hours for yours to charge! It would be a good start to see if you get on with vaping then almost inevitably you may find yourself looking for something like a Riva kit with 2 batteries (not too much price difference between a Riva kit and 2 keyrings).
I'd recommend 24mg strength liquid, you'll probably use 1 - 2 ml a day so 10 ml will last 5 - 7 days as a guide.

I use the standard resistant Kanger cartomisers on mine and it looks great with the keyring.

Oh yes and get yourself a drip tip as it feels better in the mouth than the end of a cartomiser.

Although I agree with the majority of what Des has said I would recommend getting different strengths of juice then if 1 isn't strong enough up to the next strength and on the flip side if 1 is too strong drop to a lower strength. It certainly helped me when I switched.

Des - appreciate the help. Is the Riva much bigger than the keyring? Which Riva kit would you advise?

If I go for the keyring, are you suggesting I also buy the kanger cartomisers? Do I then use those in place of the 2 that come included with the keyring and what are the reasons and benefits for that?

As for the charging. If I ran out of battery and charged the battery for say half hour on USB would that give me a but of time to use the cig if I was desperate?

Lol, I was also going to suggest that the SD keyring would suit you The Cartomisers theat come with the kit won't last for ever - though they can be refilled with juice several times over, they are meant to be disposable. Hence des suggesting you also get some of the Kanger cartomisers as they are highly regarded.

As for the charging, yes, it would be OK to just give it a short charge if desperate. The batteries don't have any memory so no harm in not fully charging them.

Use the 2 cartomisers that come with the keyring I find that I like to change them after about a week of use, they can start to tast burnt or the vapor production tails off as the coil gets worn and a deposit builds up on them.
Use any cartomiser until the vapor drops off then top it up (roughly 10 drops) and you're good to go again.

So a cartomiser lasts about a week.
10ml of e-liquid will last about 5 - 7 days
You get 2 cartomisers in the kit and if you buy 5 kangers you're good for nearly a month. If you get small bottles of e-liquid at first if you find you don't like it you've not lost too much. You could always sell or swap it for something else on here

You can partially charge the Keyring, it will not adversely affect the battery, it's just they seem to run out unexpectedly, just when you fancy a toke!

And they are under the name of grizwalds pic and mix, they'll come in medium (20mg) strength, and are an ideal starting strength.
