Okay got it torn down and put back together. Takes a bit longer then a Kayfun or Russian, but so much more flavor and clouds can be produced. Like I said before this is .511mm or 24 AWG kanthal. This same coil build and wicking also works just as good with .405MM/26 AWG and .321MM/28 AWG. Surprisingly This 24 AWG build is close to par with a Kayfun/Russian 91% on both flavor and heat produced when using a .405MM/26 AWG 8 wrap 3mm coil. First off my deck. I drilled this deck out to the next size drill bit compared to the original hole. Second Coil shots. These show how close I get the coil to the air holes and how they are positioned. Now for wicking. I stuff a lot into the holes as you can see. Then I just cut the excess in a circular motion around the main deck. Sorry if these came out blurry. Could not get my cam to focus for crud tonight. As you can see there is a LOT of cotton. With how I have the coils aligned I still get really good air flow. Plenty of air flow to keep the coils cool or close to cool. It takes me a 4 or 5 consecutive drags to get it warm/hot. Also I do not stuff the Japanese cotton into the juice holes, but with as much cotton as I use some does get trapped in the threads when putting the chimney on. All together. I have a V4 coming like in days from now lol, but this is a V2 with extended V4 chimney and Kayfun full poly tank. I also have a V1, but I'm still waiting on the top fill kayfun cap to get here for it.

Thanks Resnik, very nice write up and pics. Have you tried twisted Kanthal in one? I love it on these and Kayfuns, probably as using regulated mods and my all PG tobacco juice can not take as much heat.

I was thinking of doing a twisted 28 AWG or twisted 0.8MMx0.01MM/0.9MMx0.01MM ribbon wire. As far as my juices go I use no less then 50/50 with my VG/PG. I have found that I don't have a great tolerance for PG. It seems to make the roof of my mouth feel raw if I use it in to high of a ratio. Most of my mixes will be from 70/30 VG/PG and up, a lot as close to max VG as possible. So this build works well with thick juices.

Can't wait till I get my Lemon Chiffon Pie recipe finished. I am trying to make a clone of The Plume Rooms vesion and I'm just about right there. It's at 8.0 right now and 9.0 I think I will have the levels right. I think it will be a hit. Sweet lemon, tart lemon for zest, cream, ginger snaps crust, whipped cream..... nom nom nommins. I'm really wanting to share it with this community. It will be a 80/20 VG/PG. Lol well mine will be high VG, guess it can be changed for who ever might try it.

I tried twisting 0.8 x 0.1 ribbon single strand (I have loads that wasn't getting used, but now I built a DNA 40 I might try a geni build) and thought twisted 0.27 mm was a lot better. And twisting two strands is so quick & easy, I do about 6" at a time, you just need to reverse the drill before you release the tension and stop the wire forming kinks.
I have been at these resistances so I can take a mech with a 350 or 490 walking the dog and also use on my DNA30s that need > 0. 5 ?, but even closer to 1 ? to run at 12 W. I feel that I have been close to the limit heat wise for my liquid and am not a lung inhaler so can't use air flow to keep the temp low. Now I drilled most of my kayfun air holes I can get a lot higher . I need more DNA40s, I heard there on special buy 5 and get a devoice thrown in. I took the Orchid out on a DNA30 for an hour country walk with the dog and no leeks, do a similar thing with the wick to you, but not been brave enough to try 3 mm coils yet (worried about shorting on the chimney). I have happily had the orchid up to 30 W, but 22 W a sweet spot for mouth to lung inhales.
Opps 3 AM, work tomorrow, catch you later..

Could be of some use I do prefer Resnik's pre-bent coil legs for this deck type build (orchid/plume).

I for one would certainly be interested in the recipe once you have tweaked it to perfection, Resnik! Sounds really lush!! Thanks for the photos and description of the builds too, really helpful - I just wish that I could get my coils as neat as yours!

Funny, I've just been looking at VMA's site and some .4mm wire - is .5 easier again? I just can't get my head around the diameter x number of wraps x resistance thing, even with two apps on my laptop and one on my phone. If I use larger diameter wire, the resistance is less, right - more current flowing through the wire because the wire is thicker. So how many wraps do I need of .5 wire to arrive at about 1 ohm? I usually use about 2.5 ID as my old eyes find anything smaller and I can' thread my rayon or cotton through!

chykensa yes the thicker the wire the lower the resistance length for length. I've only ever used 0.25 and 0.3mm kanthal for microcoils but just had some 0.35 and 0.4 delivered today for a little play. So the thicker the wire the lower the resistance and the bigger diametre coil the higher the resistance. if you made two coils with the same diametre wire and same number of wraps but one 2mm and the other 3mm in diametre the 3mm diametre coil would have the higher resistance. There's a coil app that Romelee posted somewhere that works it all for you, I'll link if I can track it down. Mind in the orchid though being dual coil you'd have to make each coil 2 ohms to achieve 1 ohm overall and I'm guessing that might be a challenge with 1.5. I'll know more when I've had a play tomorrow or maybe Resnik is around

I currently (no pun intended!) have 2 x 2ohm coils in my Orchid, giving 1ohm resistance. That was using .32 Kanthal, but I could do with a longer coil to get more coverage from the wick and juice, so though that a bigger diameter wire would give me that. Am I right?

Yes either a bigger diametre or more wraps or even both of the same 0.32 will give you more coverage but the resistance will also increase. Just looked for the Super-Shiny coil makings tool he posted but he's deleted all his guides from the forum now Seems the dummy is well and truly spat out which is a shame as I'm sure many new members could learn a lot from them but hey ho. There's lots more around so I'll dig one of my PC for you tomorrow

Coil calc (with dual 0.4 2.5 mm coils input) linkE: I put target r at 1 ohm, needs 16 turns for each coil, have a play Andy changing the diameter and the thickness os wire. tag chykensa
