Files need to be converted to dvd format first before any program will write them as a dvd, I use to use something called dvd soft I think, convert them to dvd format then use the ashampoo to write them to disc.
The thing with nero is it isn't free, if you pay for it you get the full support that goes with it but if it's a cracked program it can be tricky or even faulty. Good thing with these other programs is they're freeware.

decoy you were right regards the lower burn speed. I've tried two burns at x4 burn speed and both have worked so fingers crossed it's now resolved. It does add a bit of time to the project time as I'm used to burning at x8. Does this suggest that the burner is a bit pants then and not upto the job the other machines can do without problem ? enjay thats the good thing about nero, you don't need to convert first, it recognises most formats and creates a DVD whether it be MP4, matroska, xvid or whatever. With the Klite codec pack installed I've not come across anything it doesn't recognise......... yet. Jay

I use to use nero on a regular basis but it started to annoy me after I switched to win 7 so gave up and tried other software.

JayJ, I use Imgburn for all media burning. It's a small, free, download and has a "discovery" feature that tests your burner and discs to find out the optimum speed for writing. Your burner is supposed to be capable of 8x, and your disks obviously are if you've done it before. I'm assuming you have already checked that the cpu on your laptop isn't engaged on other tasks while burning.

I've always found that dialling the burn speed back by one is the best option. 16x---->8x or 8x---->4x. I don't think that i've had a burner that likes burning at its max speed.

buggritt if I'm burning anything I pretty much always leave the lappy to it's business and have nothing else running. I'm one of these that if I want something to run I'll set it running, so from boot up I have nothing running in the background. Start/msconfig/startup/disable all. Then start the necessaries according to the task at hand. Jay
