- Lighter or blowtorch
- Phillips screwdriver for deck screws
- Screwdriver / drill bit / mandrel
- Kanthal
- Organic cotton / rayon / japanese cotton
- Ohm meter or device that will read ohms
- Something to vape on!
I am using 0.34 Kanthal, a 2.4mm screwdriver and japanese cotton but you can use any of the above.
Clean all parts of your atomizer under the tap and dry thoroughly with kitchen towel.
Make sure you have clean hands before you start as anything on your hands will also transfer to your wick and wire.
Building the CoilStep 1:
Cut yourself a length of kanthal between 15cm and 20cm - this is too much but it is better to have too much than too little!
Step 2:
Lightly torch the kanthal wire under the blue flame of the lighter, it is quicker with a blowtorch but slowly running the flame under the kanthal until it glows works just fine. This makes the kanthal less springy and much easier to work with.
Step 3:
Pinching the kanthal between your thumb and your screwdriver, do a 'wash wrap' (we will undo this later) then wrap the number of turns you wish to reach your desired ohms. Use
Steam Engine to work out how many wraps you will need for your wire and screwdriver diameter.
Step 4: Undo the first wrap so that the leads face in opposite directions, then pinch the coil closer together. Do not worry if your coils are a bit messy or not touching at this stage.
Building the KayfunStep 1:
Place you coil, still on the screwdriver, into the centre of the kayfun. Make sure the screws on the deck are a little unscrewed. The wires should pass on opposite sides of the opposite deck screws.
Step 2:
Holding the screwdriver and your coil in place, pull one of the leads around the screwthreads of the deck screw so it is at least 3/4 of the way around. Pinch the wire in place with the same hand that is holding the screwdriver so you have a free hand to tighten down the deck screws.
This is the most fiddly part and once the first one is done, the second is much easier.
Step 3:
Turn the kayfun 180 degrees and trap the second wire just as we trapped the first under the deck screw.
Step 4:
Re-align the coil so it is central, pull it up slightly off the deck so none of the wires are touching the decks and the coil is high above the air hole.
Step 5:
Clip the excess wires as close to the deck as possible, they should not poke outwards towards where the chimney will be as this will create a short.
Step 6:
Test your ohms. If you are a long way off what your target ohms were, something isn't tight down or you have another problem. start again.
If your ohms are where you wanted them to be, put your kayfun on a device and fire the mod in short bursts. You don't want to apply a lot of power to the coil just yet. Stay at 10w/4v or below. Once the coil glows (it might not be evenly at this point), give the coil a pinch together with your tweezers (not whilst firing unless you have ceramic tweezers), heat for 5 seconds, pinch for 5 seconds until the coil is nice and tight together and glowing from the middle out.
Wicking your KayfunYou can use silica wick, organic cotton, rayon or japanese cotton for your Kayfun but I prefer to use japanese cotton.
Step 1:
Cut a strip (about 6mm) of japanese cotton and twist one end, add a bit of moisture by licking your fingertips if needed.
Step 2:
Thread the wick through the coil, the cotton should slide through without pulling the coil out of place but also with a little resistance.
Step 3: Pull both of the ends of the cotton upwards and screw on the base chimney section.
Step 4:
Trim the cotton to just about the top of the chimney.
Step 5:
Fluff up the cotton if it has squashed up a little. With the flathead screwdriver poke the cotton down onto the juice decks. Do not pack it too tightly and spread the end of the cotton across the deck as much as possible, it is best to poke the cotton away from the centre part where the juice will come up to allow the juice to flow freely.
Step 6:
Put some juice on the coil and on the cotton. 3 drops of juice on each side and 1 drop directly on the coil should be enough. Wait 30 seconds for it to soak in, check there are no dry spots. Test fire the device to make sure all is well.
Screw on the top chimney piece.
Put the tank together starting with one tank section, then window section, another tank section, the top cap and the drip tip.
Filling the KayfunThe Kayfun can be filled from the top but I prefer to fill from the fill hole underneath.
Step 1:
Take the kayfun off your device and unscrew the fill screw. Put this somewhere where it won't roll away!
Step 2:
Hold your juice of choice nozzle tight to the Kayfun fill hole, gently squeeze juice into the tank.
I prefer to only go up as far as the top of the window on a first fill after a build as the vacuum isn't yet fully working.
Step 3:
Put the fill screw back in the Kayfun all the while keeping the Kayfun upside down.
When it is tight, turn the kayfun the right way and suck once on the drip tip. Bubbles should come up through the juice and the vacuum will form.
If there is some flooding, hold some tissue over the air hole and blow hard down the drip tip, excess juice will come out and the vacuum will be restored.
Put the Kayfun on your device and enjoy your vape!!
