It doesn't help that a lot of cartridges are labelled as "atomized cartridges", no wonder newbies get confused

Occam's razor I believe - generally the simplest reason is the real reason.

A belated welcome to the forum from me gumball. Had to laugh at your problem with the bottle. I've had quite a few doh! moments myself When I started I found everything difficult - my first problem with a bottle came when I had to get the dripper off one - It took me ages to figure it out. Then there was the wrestling match trying to get the cap off a Kanger cartomiser for the first time which resulted in several implements being totalled and so on and so on. You soon get used to it though - until you try something new

Gumball, don't for one minute think anyone's laughing at you - trust me, we have ALL had the experience of being total newbies and there are so many things about vaping to learn for the first couple of weeks I'd put good money on you being far from the first to hit this apparent 'snag'.
Trouble is, once you get past that first stage when you're working out how things fit together etc it is SOOOOOO easy to overlook mentioning tiny but vital little details like "squeeze the bottle" (gently)! Once you know things like that you'll never think of it again.
If I wore a hat I'd take it off in admiration for Tizerbelle's genius in working out exactly what wasn't happening on this occasion.
As Dave said, removing the cap on a carto can be quite a challenge too - some have nice soft caps which are easy to remove with just your fingernail (if you have them, not everyone does, of course) but some cartos have rigid caps which can be seriously obstinate about removal. Most people discover their own favourite tool for the job - mine are either a fine crochet hook or one of those tiny screwdrivers you can use for adjusting spectacles. The small screwdrivers come in useful for various vape-related tasks in fact (including prising dripper tips off some bottles) so I'd highly recommend keeping one handy.
Another thing worth having easily to hand is kitchen towel or loo roll for protecting work surfaces etc to absorb any liquid that goes astray while you're filling or topping up. You also want to avoid doing this sort of thing on anything like a varnished or polished surface - e-liquid can leave awful marks on them which can make you very unpopular. Likewise standing the bottle when a bit of liquid has gone down the side will leave ugly little rings on some surfaces. Once you know this, you don't do it but I'd guess plenty of us have found out this sort of thing the hard way - I have an unwanted little ring on one arm of the leather armchair I use!!

At least you had a jolly good reason for the uncertainty Gumball with all this being a whole new experience for you . . . whereas I've known for some time, that I do indeed have one left foot & one right.
