I just paid £14 to DHL for a parcel valued at $54 from China, not from either of the places you mentioned, i think it also depends on the postal service you use, maybe if i'd let the parcel come by slowboat it might have come through un-noticed.

It can be down to the value they put on the parcel when they send it

Fasttechs site even mentions that they put low values on packages and mark them as gifts. It really comes down to your luck if a parcel is opened an checked. Personally, I've never had to pay import tax on an order from China, but I've always kept orders below £30 just in case.

I've also never had any charges levied on imported stuff from China. The Chinese companies are very good at understating the contents and value; surely Customs are savvy to this, but it's just not cost effective for them to open every single parcel. I guess that they are all X-rayed and scanned so the Customs staff must have a pretty good idea of what's in the parcels. As long as the turning of blind eyes continues, we'll all be safe with the system as it is at the moment.

If you are buying from Alibaba, be it either a manufacturer or a distributer, always ask the if they will mark the package down. If they say no then try another one (there is usually a choice), especially true for anything DHL from China

Tax levied from China - NO, never. Tax levied from the USA - Yes, more times than i care to remember. I get a little bit annoyed with that but it's the couriers administrative charge that really gets me raging!!!
