Just been watching some 3D printer vids on YouTube, £500 If only I was any good on Autocad, letsavit aren't you a CAD guru ? CAD is a very broad word, many types of software that are specialised to what you do and your industry. haven't got a clue what software is used for 3D printing, it looks pretty basic and has its a limitations so the software might just come with the printer and shouldn't be too hard to work out and learn. Don't use it but solidworks is the typically the CAD software for stuff like that and would guess you need to add a 0 to that £500 to buy it..! If if you ever need a energy center or plant room designed for an hospital or similar then I'm your guru, little boxes with buttons, I'm stuck........! I'll bear that in mind should the need ever arise the £500 printer was allegedly fantastic hardware but the firmware and software supplied was very restrictive, he said it was a doddle to change the firmware to, I think he called it repetitor, or something like that and was churning out iPhone cases. Lucked dead easy but of course you have to create the CAD designs first to upload and he was using Autocad to create his files to upload to the printer.

If you know how to use a scale rule, add the dimensions you want etc and do some basic drawings on paper to send me I can knock you something up in Autocad.....but it will need to be able to talk to the printer, the file format wil be .dwg....using others CAD data and getting it into to mine is one of my biggest issues.... Edit...we are kinda derailing windows thread here...if you/we think 3D printing is useful to us we need to start new....

Its ok guys not a problem, been looking at 3d printers myself at maplin. Its a big spend unless you have a something in mind that you could sell loads of. You might be better off uploading a cad to shapeways. Thats what the guy who designed all the mod boxes they do has done.

@windows IIRC there is a french/euporean site that is cheaper than shapways, and the first rule of any club is maplin aren't going to give you the best price.
When 3D printing started took off there was an open source movement around it where the printer was made of 80+% off the shelf parts and the other special parts could be 3D printed. There was a sort of social contract where once you built one you made the special parts needed for others at near cost.

I only went away for the weekend @windows and when i get back you've made another one!! Looks very good indeed. Finalised the design for my second build now and just about ready to start building. I'll wait until I've finished before I post this time, I feel I tempted fate on my first one. Sculpteo is the main competitor of Shapeways VapingBad
