Hi guys,
I'm still quite new (been on the vape just 2 months now) but just wanted to share what I've experienced that might be of help to other newbies.
I mainly use a Kanger Aerotank EMOW with 1.5ohm dual microcoil. Yesterday I tried using it with a single 1.8ohm microcoil (which came with my Protank 2) and found it was much better in every way!
I'm definitely going to stick with this single 1.8ohm microcoil (which is quite a bit cheaper than 1.5ohm microcoil on Fasttech - that's if you're not in to building your own). Maybe some of the more experienced guys on the forum care to comment?

When I think of microcoil, I think of handmade or premade coils and cotton wool.

Hi djsI'm comparing authentic manufactured Kanger microcoils as in Dual Microcoil and Single Microcoil. And for a pack of 5 we're talking $6.63 (£4.31 dual) and $3.74 (£2.43 single). In fact I ordered 30 of the singles and with the bulk discount they cost about £0.43 each! That's to tide me over while I start making my own!

The problem with all the manufacturers' coil heads is how much they vary in quality/effectiveness, even between coils in the same blister packs. If you're lucky, you'll receive 30 superb heads that'll each last a week or two (depending on your juice and usage). If not, they could need replacing every day.

To my knowledge mikemichelle Kanger don't manufacture "microcoils". The stock Kanger heads are open coils wrapped around a silica wick, whereas a microcoil is a 'closed' coil where all the wraps of wire are touching. These are then wicked with usually cotton wool or rayon (other materials can sometimes be used too). It is possible to but pre-made microcoils both in the UK and also from the likes of Fasttech, but most of us wrap our own microcoils, which are the coil of choice for most rebuildable atomisers or RBA/RTAs (the 'R' stands for 'rebuildable'). It's an easy mistake to make as the Kanger coils are so closely wrapped that they do look a bit like microcoils, but they aren't. Having said all this, it is worth trying a proper microcoil, maybe from Virtual Vape at Virtual Vape - they are quite easy to install into a Protank single-coil head, and once in, will last for months with a dry burn and re-wicking every week or so, which you can easily do yourself. Give us a shout if you need links to tutorials or video clips showing this procedure, and move your vaping up to the next level

I assumed they were "welded together" as per their pre-coiled welded wires with wicks. I've just ordered a bunch of these! I thought they'd be pretty much the same but apparently not!

mikemichelle- the reason that 'welded' appears in the title is that the legs are No Resistance wire, whilst the section with the coil is Resistance. This saves the legs burning the little rubber insulator grommet at the bottom of the head. I don't think Fasttech do pre-made microcoils, although I'm sure someone will soon correct me if I'm wrong! Virtual Vape's Unicoil looks identical, but comes with a pre-installed microcoil which can be dry burnt and rewicked time after time. They are a bit more expensive, but will easily last 2 months, so the savings are quite considerable. Hope this helps! Edit: to be fair to the competition, here's a similar product from Nature Vape, this one designed to fit a Dual Coil device - Nature Vape Pro Coil DC

Those are NR-R-NR coils, the welded part refers to the fact that you have two different kinds of wire joined together. The legs or either end of the wire are NR which stands for Non Resistant, the centre(the actual coiled part) of the wire is R which stands for resistant.

I did just whip up a Kanger T3S for somebody today and put in one of those FT Kanger coils. As we know... might do a day or a week, but 43p is fair enough. The premade wicks with wire you have ordered are useable, yes.. in the 'old' single coil housings. It's a good place to start learning to rebuild.

chykensa ... with the "closely wrapped" Kanger coils, is it possible to squeeze and heat the coils and effectively create a microcoil out of these?

Yes, I find the new design kanger dual coil (the one with the metal can) isn't nearly as good as the original Dual Coil (looks like the single coil with a longer rubber seal).

chykensa ... with the "closely wrapped" Kanger coils, is it possible to squeeze and heat the coils and effectively create a microcoil out of these? You might be able to, but I suspect that the wire is quite thin, and therefore more springy and uncooperative At the price you are paying though, it's worth a try! You may then find that the resistance is too low. Best thing is get yourself some .25 Kanthal and have a play before you need to, that way you relieve the stress of getting it right so you can vape!
