I`ve been playing with the Smok80plus (0006) this morning and it seems to be working better, but it must have nickel wire. Nowhere have I seen that you use nickel. They were promoting this as able to work with kanthal on temp control. When I put a nickel build in it, it performs reasonably well if your wicking is good.
The problem is that when you have been vaping for a bit and the residual coil temp has increased, the mod just starts from scratch every puff you take on the mod. So it has moved the temp goalposts. With the Evolve, it puts you on a set plan after it has done the "same coil/old coil" thing. The Smok doesnt do that. So after a while when your coil resistance has risen because the atty has warmed up etc and maybe the wicking has got a bit worse, the vape temp increases.
The main thing is you cannot drip on the Smok because the wicking is changing from the moment you top it up. It gradually reduces understandably as the residual juice in the wick gets less and less and the resistance inside the atty increases warming the coil and raising it`s temp. If SMOK can change the firmware so that it takes a proper reference resistance for the coil (as Evolve do) they may well have cracked it. Another firmware change with a resistance reference routine may well totally fix it.
I dont know how much of this holds true for the first version, I didn`t try it with nickel to this extent. It still doesn`t excuse SMOK for releasing it the way they did.

Such a firmware change would be simple to implement. The one I have on the way has been confirmed as firmware 0006 so I may have just bought the right one. Things may (subjectively) be looking up for us

Things may (subjectively) be looking up for us I think it is all fixable now, I must have missed something somewhere, but I haven`t seen anywhere that this is a nickel mod. I don`t know whether the same was true for the first version. I have the instructions for the second version and there is no mention of nickel, which seems to be the only way this thing can work technically Ripshod.

By the way, forget about comparing the temp on the Evolve and Kangxin with it, it is nowhere near, much lower settings are required.

It's definitely got to be nickel robby. Although I can't find anything that states temperature control requires nickel, it must be as the temperature coefficient of kanthal is too small to be able to work out the temperature to the degree necessary. Although nothing is mentioned in Smok's product pages surely there's something about it in the destruction manual?

Not a mention Ripshod, that was the main marketing point of this mod, the fact that it would temp control another way and allow you to use kanthal. That`s what all the bad vids etc have been based on. Very little about using nickel and certainly nothing positive. The only times it regulates is when the coil has changed resistance in tempe mode.

Sounds like I need some nickel wire afterall. I wonder how it works on their VCT with nickel coils?

It`s really low resistance, 8 turns on a 3.5mm former only gives you about 0.2 ohms

I saw that. Not knowingly gone so low. .5 ohms on my sub mini is as far as I have got. Not sure what difference going to .2 would be.
