We all need them... BUT they are taking longer and longer to install, which I have no problem with... but I wish they gave a warning of how long they will take. Have just updated the laptop, but the desktop (Win7) is taking forever with no indication of how long it will take. Luckily, I'm not going anywhere, but if it was during the day, when I'm about to go out... what do you do? I have just powered off in the past, and got away with it... but it is risky, surely.

I don't allow auto updates, but with Windows 8.1 I'm reminded I have updates pending when I log in. So just before I log off, I check which updates I want & usually it takes a max of half an hour but often only a couple of minutes.

Do your self a favour and dump Norton its a resource hog, use a freebie one just as good, plus many dont know if you have a Antivirus software, turn off the windows firewall, they clash On your updates if you get ones coming up "failed", run CCleaner reg cleaner and then retry, now the good bit! run windows disc cleaner after you have done updates it stores the downloads[you dont need them they have been installed and use disc space] If your Pc/Lappy has an SSD[ solid state drive] DONT defrag it

Paranoia with windows O/S's is not paranoia LOL Not a truer work hath been spoken. I use PC and have grown to Hate MS not windows but MS. They make their own rules and payoff god knows who to gain an advantage over rivals. The IE saga went on for so long that by the time a ruling was made, IE was already sitting comfortably at the top, and only slowly diminishes when user gets so fed up with it they make the change. Dont like the way you dont own the copy of windows you paid nearly £180 for, but only buy the right to use it PHOOEYIt registers itself to one machines MAC ID and if you don't de-register it you can have problems if you get new computer and want to use it. Not over as i was going to say Raffles i have done both my pc/laptop and as i have pre SP1 copy the update count on my laptop was 208 and my poor old Dell Lappy just could handle all the memory needed for doing so many updates at once and crashed leaving me loads of failed updates most were able to reinstall which its easy to find which by 'List by name' but 3-4 just wouldn't go through. Try input the error codes to google and find out why MS send you on a right merry-go-round trying this and then that and after hours you get fed up and try fresh windows install again. Ill try and remember andy01424 advice when i next do this.

God, I've no end of hatred towards windoh!s and microtrash. Why do I get forced to install windows media player, internet explorer, and myriad other pieces of bloatware that I will NEVER use!
Microtrash better wake up and realise that it's trash runs on OUR IT resources. Many people do NOT want what basically amounts to malware on our systems. I am forced to use windoh!s because I need to use certain software for work that I havent managed to get running uder WINE(a linux virtual machine that lets windows applications run on linux) due to non standard calls to the graphics system. This doesn't mean that I need bug ridden bloatware eating up my hard drive space, comsuming cpu cycles and thus electricity.
Don't know how much time I've spent stripping windoh!s down to its underwear and removing all that crap.
In short my main bugbears are
1. Software released without adequate testing resulting in a neverending series of patches (called updates to make them sound less like fixes to micrtrashes cock ups) 2. Bloatware - Buggy, insecure software that is preinstalled under the pretence of making the system easier to use when it is in fact a blatant attempt to prevent other developers from gaining a market share, even non profit organisations. 3. Resource hungry eye candy turned on by default making many less well informed users think they need to buy new hardware. 4. Microtrash's repeated avoidance of multi-billion dollar fines/lawsuits by giving some pocket change to charities or gevernments. 5. Use of locked down, non standard protocols and file formats to promote vendor lock in. 6. Microtrash executives being in bed with big tobacco and pharma (ok,ok,ok I made this last one up, but the rest are valid)

I only asked I bow to you experts, but most is lost on me now. My love affair with computers was lost when I could no longer just amend my 'autoexec.bat' file to impress my mates. Thank you for your responses.

Dont lose the best advice you were given on here DITCH NORTON
Download the free version of Avast (my current favourite) or AVG, they are reckoned to be BETTER than Norton and DONT hog the resources

RANT RANT RANT £180,!!!!!!!!!! i use there download free for 30 days then use Dazs Bootloader to unlock it...zilch free..... As for SSds dunno if Pc world still doing it but they were selling 500gb Crucial ssd for £109 bargain! and if you do delete anything inc Norton and if you was unlucky not to uncheck the box on Adobe install and get MacFee! do this to remove it COMPLETELY! to make stuff easier to find in control panel ! go to control Panel -Appearance and Personalisation -Customize Start Menu and click on the Start menu tab,on right is customise click that,in all the boxs check the-Display as menu, click ok close then apply..... everything will display as a aplhabetical list[lot easier to find stuff] Now go to control panel--Folder options and click on View tab,Check hidden files and folders drives, click apply......... Now if you dont have your drives displayed in lower taskbar, click start and got run now type C [2 semi colons, have an italian keyboard!] this will openn your hard drive, click on users and then name that you have given your PC shows normally with a padlock symbol next to it. click and open the Appdata, then local, you can now delet what you have installed completely this is where the backup was stored, and yup those 30 day trials delete it and it should work again, now run CCleaner reg cleaner remove andy hotfixs linking them to it
