There are subtle differences between brands, but provided you use a 'decent' one you probably wont notice.
If you want to follow a recipe EXACTLY then obviously use the stated ones, the main variation is the strength, so if a recipe says for instance 10% of brandX you may find that you only need 5% of brandY or maybe 15% of brandZ, the recipe has been calculated with those brands in mind.
I'm moving more and more into Chefs Vapours Rebranded range, they are mostly quite strong (so you need less) and remarkably cheap.

Then we have personal preference, the custard, strawberry, menthol etc that I like will not necessarily be to your liking...im aware im not really answering the question but that's because it can't really be answered. in my opinion if you want to keep things simple to start with then go to @ukflavours they offer a great selection of very good concentrates at a price that is excellent!. which of the recipes were you looking at wildpolecat and maybe we can help further??

As others have said, the differences can be minimal or they can be quite noticeable, it's a hard question to answer in absolute terms. However - if you want to try a recipe that has caramel in it for example, and you don't have any caramel then buy the suggested brand. If you do have a caramel concentrate but it's not the suggested brand try what you have, it's not going to be a million miles from the original taste.

Also certain flavours are only made by that company , gingermel by decadent vapour is a prime example. If your rec uses something like that then try to go with what was used. However as others have said caramel , sweeteners will pretty much be interchangeable.
