I may be completely wide of the mark, but guitar strings are often 'overwound', meaning that the core wire is overwound with either round or flat, ribbon-like wire to increase the tone without needing extra length. 'Roundwound' or 'flatwound' are the (logical) descriptions. This of course maybe completely irrelevant in this case . . .
